Re: Hoochie Coochie Men + Lord

Concerning the DVD and amazon.de :

I've ordered (reserved!) 2 copies, two months ago(03.03.).They told me the delivery date will be 22-24.04.I've waited and waited.
Nothing happened.Then I've contacted them.Took another 3 days to get a reply.
The answer then was that it's not available anymore - great.
I was so disappointed that I refused to order 2 second hand copys through them.
Instead I've ordered them at play.com in Britain, who were very quick with "JL With Pictures".
That was great customers service by amazon. emoticon

You have to watch it with Amazon, especially when you are involved in a pre order purchase.

Lesliescream,

When you finally get your copy of Hoo-Coo + Lord mailed to you...it will be worth the wait.

"Green Onions" is a marvelous groove, and it takes on an aire of greater sterness being played in the key of D instead of F. Just those 1 and a half steps down, changes the aura of the song...don't ask me why, it just does.

Watch how JL handles the subtle nuances of "Strange Brew" toggling back and forth on the inverse colored preset keys, to get a whah-whah effect on the Hammond. Truly brilliant he is...though I'm not saying anything we don't already know.

And of course the whole DVD is just wonderful, with the rest of the band deserving their fair share of "at-a-boys" as well.

I'll shut up now and just let you watch it....you'll see what I mean.

I got this album recently.

Thanks for a great review, BTH. I agree with most of it (and certainly with your point about Barnes doing WABMC!).

Personal highligts are Green Onions (that riff, that huge sound - plus a very "Purple" middle section) and the old Dixon number Who's Been Talkin'. The latter is a great tune, with Lordy throwing in minor runs like a man possessed.

A further interesting thing about the latter track is how they mix it with All Your Love by Otis Rush: the guitar vibrated minor chord bit and the change of tempo towards the end. But I could imagine that it was not necessarily intentional as the songs aren't too different and the band is doing blues standards anyway!

Lesliescream,

And the funny thing is his intent was to just play it to relax, as opposed to just getting on a plane and heading home to nurse his injury.

Imagine that!! To play that well, would require my full concentration, and I'd probably be stressed for weeks before the gig, making sure I sound that good (if such a thing were ever possible).

Jon Lord? Ah...he just nonchalantly shows up, says, "ahh...playing some blues sure beats 12 hours on a plane...think I'll just have some fun with this....ahhh, there we go...a couple of drawbars here...some keys there....yea, that's the sound....stick it to ya' Manfred Mann!!"

Dude had fun, wasn't even trying that hard, and still played 10x's better than I could ever play, stressing myself out and raising my blood pressure to boot.

How amazing is that?
