How can I change my title so I'm not a "purple user"? Because, you know, it sounds like I've got a habit or something

It changes for all, you cannot choose a title just for yourself. I made the title Purple User.

I prefer user to fan. Fan means fanatic, which I am not. Anyway, you can catagorize users, so for an example:
0-100 posts: newbie
101-200 posts: trained
201-300 posts: find a hobby
---

Yeah, you can grant users some levels, but I don't think it's necessary to categorize people just by the amount of posts.
