Finally watched Glenn's new DVD
Bottom line: Not bad, but a great opportunity was missed.
I've never seen Glenn live except on the CalJam DVD. So I was really looking forward to this DVD. Overall, the performance is fine and I think JJ Marsh is an under-rated guitarist. The songs seemed to be performed very well.
But....
From his comments, this show was designed to be a DVD right from the start. It was a very intimate crowd and you could tell they tried to set the right atmosphere with the candles and people sitting on the floor.
But that doesn't translate well to DVD. It seemed a little dark to me. Another thing...I've never understood the reason to switch between color and black & white at various points. What does that accomplish other than making me think the color went out on my TV?
The setlist didn't do much for me considering the purpose of the DVD. Here was a perfect opportunity to put together a really long show that would cover all aspects of Glenn's career. Sure, he touched on Trapeze, Purple and solo, but it was too short of a show and too predictable of a setlist in terms of the "classic" songs.
Unless he's going to crank out DVDs the way he's been cranking out albums, I say make this one show really, really special. How about something from 7th Star other than No Stranger To Love? How about something else from the Purple catalog other than the obligatory songs? (Maybe The Gypsy?) How about anything from Feel, From Now On, Addiction, etc?
Both Jeff Beck and Michael Schenker recently did shows where they hit just about each album from their careers. It was great to hear. Glenn has a legacy that's just as good.
So it's not that the show is so bad. I just think it could have been better.
Now the interviews.....ugh! A few people telling us what we already knew...that Glenn is a great singer.
And then there's this strange "interview" with questions being asked by Kevin Dubrow and some woman. But it doesn't look like they're in the same room with Glenn. It's like they asked questions and Glenn answered them at some other time.
A thorough walkthrough of Glenn's career with someone who knows how to do an interview would have been really special.
I know this comes off as one big gripe session, but it's so disappointing that someone as talented as Glenn, and with so much history, chooses something like this as his first concert video in 30 years.

Thanls for the review!
I still haven't decided if I should get this yet!
I've heard a few reports that it is not the best thing on the market.
Loved the live album though!
--- Saw it on the tube
Bought it on the phone
Now you're home alone
It's a piece of crap

as a DVD is not the best thing, but the performance worths a lot (Medusa and Getting Tigher kick ass!). if you got other DVD priority get this one latter, but get it too.
