Re: New Bombay Calling dvd with bonus tracks

> I would agree that the basic reason to produce/release the video in the first place was to more to $$$$ reasons than any other, anyway.

Keep in mind how unique this video was at the time. It wasn't like there were a lot of documentary-type videos being released in the U.S. focusing on "old" acts. And DP weren't exactly at their peak with JLT.

So the fact that anyone would invest the money to produce this was pretty amazing. These days, you have to be one of the top acts to get a record company to put out any money for projects like this.

Sure, the intent was to make some bucks. But I'm still amazed it ever got made considering where the band was at the time and how the music scene was changing in the early 90's.

I know it has its flaws, but as someone who didn't discover DP until the reunion, this video was pure gold. Where else could you get any good history of the band in video form in the states? MTV was around, but there was no place to see old video clips on U.S. TV. This video was the first time I ever saw the band playing in the 70's.

If nothing else, it's been over a decade since it was released and JLT still can't live down the "drivel" comment. He must wonder if that comment will be on his tombstone.

Too bad that Rock Family Tree show from the U.K. couldn't be expanded to become a complete documentary of the band to this point.

As far as I'm concerned RFT is better by far, besides I already had the footage shown
on POHM,the MH '72 footage and the rest of it was nothing new to me.
I'll stick with my RFT dvd thank you. emoticon

I don't think there's much question that "RFT" is by far the superior of the two ("POHM" vs "RFT").
I also understand Jake's point about "POHM" being considered as "pure gold" for the average person either just getting into or perhaps even re-discovering Deep Purple around '91/92. It was probably much more readily available (and still might be, for that matter, in some circumstances)for said average person.
Just as an aside - when exactly (or as close to "exact" as possible) was the "RFT" documentary done? I should know, but I'm drawing a blank right now! emoticon
Yeah, The Squealy Little Morphodite will more than likely NEVER be able to escape from the notorious "drivel" comment - and well, the squealy little morphodite probably shouldn't be allowed to, either! emoticon I've seen apologists for the squealy little morphodite offer up some pretty lame(by my unforgiving standards, of course)excuses for the comment, and the furthest I will go as far as allowing for an excuse might be that later in the interview the squealy little morphodite tried to clear up, elaborate or give a clearer interpretation for the "drivel" comment and it simply wasn't(due to editing)put into the video. By the way, has that interview from which the "drivel" comment is taken ever been seen anywhere else in it's entirety? If there's another source to see that interview in it's entirety, maybe- just maybe, the squealy little morphodite might get cut some slack. But I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a reprieve if I was the squealy little morphodite*. emoticon If the "drivel" comment does wind up on The Squealy Little Morphodite's tombstone, it might just be the most complimentary thing carved on it anyway! emoticon

*If I was a squealy little morphodite I like to think I'd do the honorable thing - a ritualistic application of the ancient Japanese tradition of seppa ku. emoticon

RFT was done in 1995,I still think POHM came out in the summer of '92 but It's still not going to get it taken off the shelves.CHOHW WAS RELEASED WHILE RITCHIE WASN'T IN THE BAND, YET IT HAD HIM ON IT SO MAYBE MY POINT IS USELESS ABOUT THE TIMELINE FOR POHM AND GILLANS RETURN.
THE "DRIVEL" COMMENT NEVER REALLY BOTHERED ME BUT IT SURE GETS PEOPLE AROUND HERE PRETTY STEAMED. emoticon Caps,I just thought he was commenting on having to sing anyones songs and not a direct coment as Gillans lyrics being "drivel" but I do have a problem with that statement in general since he's been out of Purple because he has made two tribute albums and sung on several tribute compliations including atleast two Purple ones,so thats even worse than talking about Gillan specifacally being "drivel".

Yup, that's kinda where I was going about the "drivel" comment, too. Maybe he qualified the remark to say it wasn't a reflection on Gillan's work that he would obviously be "covering", at least to some extent, while working in Purple, and it was edited so as to not appear on the vid. Nevertheless, as you point out, MicStand,it's pretty much established that the squealy little morphodite will sing any "drivel" he's paid to sing - before(5 years + change{?}) and after(well over a decade now - thank God!) his stint in Purple.(Those wigs + spandex trousers need to paid for somehow, damnit! emoticon And getting the "final operation" to become a complete female ain't cheap either! emoticon)
The timeline issue isn't exactly "useless", but maybe more "trivial" - which isn't necessarily a bad thing, in my mind. I don't know why, but for some reason I was thinking it was released in the summer of '91. But, like we're kinda saying, due to pre-production, lead times, abrupt band personnel changes,etc.,etc. the vid could still have been out of date - so to say - whenever it got it released.

It's the JLT interview where he's joined by Blackmore on a sofa, right ? I think it's from an interview session in Germany (probably), and different interviewers are talking to them as I've seen bits from different countries' TV. In one Blackers talks about soccer, in another he's joking around with JLT, etc. I believe it's the same location JLT and Lord are also interviewed for TV, so I'm guessing they took turns with JLT present at all times.

Yeah, that's the one SandBagger. Do you know if it's in it's entirety anywhere? You know, from beginning to end and (well, as far as we'd know)in it's unedited form?
I just remembered another pathetic piece of squealy little morphodite asslicking that's in that interview...when Blackmore goes on about(obviously "putting on" the interviewer{s}, in my non-humble opinion)being a part of the 3 Musketeers or whatever the hell the band's name was and describes the silly antics they engaged in as far as a "stage act" as being the band he most enjoyed being a part of and had the most fun in, and there's the squealy little morphodite sitting there nodding it's head and trying to look authoritatively serious and all knowing - like it was there, or something. Always reminded me of a squealing little morphodite marionnette nodding it's head to the master's (Blackmore's) strings. The utter depths of patheticism, it was... emoticon

I really don't think it's available anywhere in its entirty, different people interviewed them that day so getting the one session in question in whole is, well, questionable. Maybe the makers of HMP have it or a transcript laying around somewhere, but what JLT said or meant exactly that fateful day will probably remain a mystery forever. emoticon

Ritchie is very fond of the time he had in the Three Musketeers, funny how he could have had such a blast when in that interview he says I think we performed once a year, the band was only together a short time,it must have been aweful wild or he was just fantasizing as usual. emoticon
