Colorizing the Copenhagen '72 Footage

This came up under another topic in this forum and I think it deserves it's own thread.

Not sure if anyone involved actually considered this. I have spoken to some friends about it and I do know something about the process.

Could it be done?

I have been thinking back to remember if anyone has ever colorized video footage in the past. Normally colorization is done of old movies shot on film. Good quality negatives are sought out and transfered to video. And using software that is still too expensive for the general public the footage is colorized one scene at a time. Considering that the Copenhagen footage was actually shot on video might create a challenge in colorizing it. You don't have a high quality print to start from and I'm not sure how it would be handled by the software. It could cause problems. And we all know that the video suffers often from audio noise.

I'm sure that colors could be determined. There are tons of photos of the band over time. I'm sure that wouldn't be an issue.

I don't believe a concert has ever been colorized. The amount of constant movement within scenes would cause challenges.

The cost...I know of a company that does it for about $25,000 for every 30 min of footage. So this film would cost around $75,000 or more to colorize.

Does anyone want it colorized? I myself would think it of interest. But many are against the colorization of old movies. So would someone really put out that kind of cash for something like that?

Personally I would rather the $75,000 to $100,000 used to dig up other footage. Or maybe throw in Dick Clark's face to get the whole Hofstra show from '73 that he won't release. (We have never determined that this does or doesn't still exist. We have all read the info on the net stating that Dick Clark productions won't release the whole show for any amount of money. To me that says a lot about its existance)

You could also use the money to get one of the 5 reunion era shows '84/85 out on DVD.

These are my thoughts.

Interesting post, Rijir.

About the whole NY '73 gig existing on film: in the sleeve notes of the new dvd, Robinson writes that the film was edited to the 25 minute lenght and the rest was wiped. I believe he knows the matter. Perhaps even he thought earlier that the whole gig exists?

About the colorizing: I don't think it would be worth it, and would it look authentic, ultimately? I don't know. Of course, like you wrote, the techinque has progressed a lot since the tinting of old silent movies. Hmmm, perhaps they one day color one track, just for the heck of it (costly and timeconsuming as it were)!

Personally I´d only want it to be done if you could make out the actual colours that were there at the time. That would be possible as you say with contemporary photos, so you could (like in photoshop for instance) kind of copy and paste the actual colours and transfer them. Now the real problem is that you can take them only from one point on the palette that´s offered you so all the gray scales would go missing and that´s why always all colorized b/w films have looked so weird, as this is the hardest thing to reproduce.
So no, I think even despite bettered technology a convincing result is as good as impossible, as interesting it could turn out to be I don´t think anyone would really be satisfied by the result.

There is a new company out there colorizing films. There first project was a buch of 3 Stooges shorts. I have them on DVD and they honestly are the best I have ever seen. If you didn't realize it you would think they were shot in color. They actually search and sample colors from the era to use in the process. So they are really trying to do it right and true.

I still don't see it happening with a Purple show though.
