Slaves as Rainbow

Since almost everyone seems to pick on Slaves, saying it's Deep Rainbow or calling it Who do we think we are Deep Purple or Rainbow, I figured I would ask how you rank it against the Turner Rainbow albums.

Please choose two favorites and if possible add a comment below to specify which one you like best.

Bent Out of Shape does it for me. Perhaps the first and only time Blackmore managed to merge great songs within a commercial format successfully. Other albums had glimpses of it, but this worked as a whole, IMHO.

But just when he had seemingly found what he was looking for, it was all over.

Agree on BOOS for same reasons as Rahul. The commercial formula was applied perfectly. I would go for S&M in second place.

Hey, Stargazer? I got a question - how can I rank it against itself? Or was this a trick question/poll choice? emoticon

I guess if you want to get picky you could. But the point was, if you think it is as good or better give one of your votes to Slaves and then make a comment about which is the best. the poll is in effect a side point to the main question. The main question is meant to be answered as per my last sentence of the original post.

 My answer to that is

I like Slaves the Best and then SBTE. BOOS is my least favorite.

Well I voted for SBTE and BOOS. These are sentimental faves of mine. S&M is solid but it doesn't have enough memorable hooks, while DTC has several strong tracks and memorable hooks but it's a bit inconsistent.

Re: Slaves as Rainbow

I think Blackmore got it - the expression of his 'commercial-rock' sensibilities - right the most times on "Difficult To Cure" + "Bent Out Of Shape". With 1991's "Slaves + Masters" the formula wasn't successfully concocted, in an overall sense.
Instrumentally, "Slaves + Masters" _does_ sound to me like a fairly decent Rainbow tape minus lyrics/vocals...with the lyrics/vocals it becomes the 8th Rainbow studio album 5 years ahead of "Stranger In Us All" (a far superior effort to "S+M", in my non-humble opinion).
