I haven't read through all of this thread yet, but how did the top 5 bass players morph into a Blackmore v Morse thread?

But not Top 5 material.

You're not DJ_Bjorn in disguise are you?

charisma. Technical perfection

I believe you slipped up there dear, now way is Blackmore more technically perfect than Steve Morse,I repeat NO WAY.
And as for charisma, huh,it's not as if the scowlling one has any more than Steve, after all, charisma is based more on enthusiastic qualities than sour moodiness. emoticon
(oops my bad))in a hurry as usual)

I generally try to stay out of these type of arguments as I find them a bit tedious, but I am bored and going to take issue with that statement.

Technical perfection is, in my opinion, completely irrelevant when it comes to judging how good/bad a guitar player is. Steve Morse is likely technically more gifted than all the modern day electric guitar greats - Jimi Hendrix, Dave Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore etc. Does that make him better? Well if technical perfection is what you are aming for, then yes. I would argue that however technical perfection does not leave much room for pure emotional, raw, explicit guitar playing. Whilst undoubtedly Steve Morse is a fine guitar player, I find listening to the afore mentioned much more exciting and enjoyable. I think that is what TP was getting at.

I think you are completely wrong about the charisma of RB and SM. I hate to say it but Steve Morse has about as much stage presence and charisma as a dead duck. Charisma is not defined in my opinion, by one's enthusiastic qualities. Blackmore was centrainly very charismatic in his day. He was cynical, a bit unorthodox, rude and most importantly, mysterious. Steve Morse just sort of blends in, Blackmore doesn't and never has!

That is my opinion and although it likely a load of old rope, I thought I would share it anyway!

Re: Top 5 bass players

For one Ali,TP started that one,I merely elaborated.
I'd like to know when I have ever even come close to insinuating that Morse is better than Blackmore, just because he is better at a couple of things, and just because I like them both???????????
This is just people not reading closely or something.
There is no better guitar player for me than Ritchie and there never has been nor will be!!!!!!!!!(.)
I have stopped some people in their tracks here who speak of Morse having limited capibilities.(nonsense)
If he does, then he's certainly not the only one.
He demonstrates much more veriety in short spurts than most gutarists I've heard.
Two thing's I do maintain about him being better than Blackmore is his picking prowess and his technical proficiency, and thats all,it's rediculous to say that that means I think he is better overall.
My favorite music from Blackmore is probably his earliest recordings, most of which the majority of people here have yet to hear, due to the rarity of that period,
collecting has helped me enjoy this sensational portion of his career.
I am talking over 40 sessions.
