The World's Loudest Band Record
I am curious about the history of the record for world's loudest rock band. I know that the current and according to the records people, permanent record holder is Manowar. Prior bands that have held the record have been Deep Purple and Motörhead, and I believe that I have heard that the Who, Ramones, and Iron Maiden may have held the record at some point.
Does anyone have exact information on this subject?

I remember a loudness level test German pop magazine Popcorn made in 1981 at an open air festival in Germany, Motorhead were quite shocked to find out Foreigner had been louder than them ! (It had a great bill BTW, other bands included Kansas and .38 Special.)

In the early 70s Deep Purple were, according to Guiness Book Of World Records, the loudest band in the world. In 76' they were beaten by The Who.

I saw Ted Nugent in Manchester in 1977 (RIP Free Trade Hall) and my ears are still ringing. I think it's the call of the wild.

I read somewhere a long time ago that Nugent was officially registered as 'profoundly deaf' by the American authorities.....so he has to play loud so he can hear

Beck has my sympathies. Once reputed to be the loudest drummer in town because they never had to mic me up, I'm now paying the price.
