Most pension scheme contributions aren't subject to income tax and the final lump sum isn't taxed either. It's the pension scheme's investment returns that Gordon Brown has seen fit to tax.....not bad when you consider how much isn't being taxed?

Sure.. but just having had my contributions whacked up by a whole percent, and then the amount of pension this contribution will buy reduced by a considerable amount..........

Couple all this with no guarantee there'll be anything left for me as the scheme is closed to new members.......

I would just like to be able to eat, clothe and house myself at 70.

Not end up in the Workhouse like people did back in Victorian times.

Watch this space! emoticon

No doubt there will be a public-private initiative type thingy to introduce a form of community-based, work-related benefit scheme to support those in need incapable of doing a shift at the local Tescos..........

The Workhouse by a 21st Century name

Heaven Forbid.

The return of the workhouse would be far more likely under a Tory government.

Whichever way you look at it, the Labour Party is commited to reducing the gap between rich and poor, and as long as that remains a bedrock of Labour Party policy, they'll get my vote.

Inequality exists in many areas of society -
Income, health, poverty, lifestyle, life chances and opportunities. The Labour Party will do more to ensure that these criteria are properly addressed.

I think your assertion will be based on figures from the first three years of Labour's office (1997 to 2000) and that the wealth levels of poorer people in society have in fact increased since Labour came to power.

A quote from your report -

"Of those born in 1958, 30 per cent from the poorest backgrounds remained poor.
The rest moved into higher income groups with about 17 per cent making into the richest group.
Of those from the wealthiest backgrounds, just under 20 per cent ended up poor - about a third remained top earners.
Compare that with those born in 1970. The proportion staying poor has shot up, while those moving to the top group has fallen back. Many more of the rich are staying rich"

Those born in 1970 would have been educated and brought into the wonderful world of work under the Tories.

Whereas those born in 1958 and therefore educated and commencing work under Labour would appear to have faired better.

However, and despite the hard hitting content of the report, I'd always back Labour against the Tories when it comes to reducing inequality.
