Mini disc recorders are like £100 on ebay! i dont got much money to throw about so looks like the boot is off unless i someone drops one and i find it

I can recommend MD-Recorders with a (good sounding) Longplay mode so that you don't need to change the MD for 320 minutes (SHARP MD-MT 888H). Changing a MD is not good cause you can not take out the MD just after pushing STOP cause it takes some time to write the data on the disc. So maybe you miss the beginning of the next song.
