Steve had to convince the others Don was the right guy

In a new interview with Steve in a magazine here in Norway – called Monster Magazine – Steve talks about ROTD, his own band and Don as "the new guy".

Steve explains how he had to convince the other guys that Don was the right guy.

"Don has everything this band needs, I told them. But they had somebody else in mind," Steve says.

Who would that be? emoticon

That's interesting, Eirik. I'm trying to remember if I heard even any rumors of other keyboardist's names that were either merely considered or actually asked about succeeding Jon Lord in Deep Purple, or even 'depping' for him as Airey did prior to Lord's eventual retirement from the band.
I realize that your last "Who would that be? " was probably meant to humorously rhetorical, so that's how I decided to treat it. emoticon

Yes, Don has showed everybody that he IS the right guy in the right place. Don't think there are many - or any - keyboard player who could step in like he did when Lord was ill, or contribute to revitalize the band like he has done lately.

Therefore these speculations are pretty harmless, me thinks emoticon

I have not heard anything about anybody else beeing concidered as Lord's replacement either. But if Steve says so, it's worth a thread..

The "other" guy was Peter Robinson of Quatermass. I've read it in an interview in a Polish magazine when they were promoting "Bananas" (the interview was probably with Rog, but I don't remember). And to tell you the truth, despite Don being simply superb on studio recordings, I think that Peter Robinson, if given a chance, might have pushed the "live Purple" to it's edges... If you listened to Quatermass one and only (original line-up) album, you know what I mean. Jon Lord is the master of hard rock keyboards, but I think that Peter is the definitive keyboardist for progressive rock. Not Rick Wakeman, not Keith Emerson, but Peter Robinson.

Interesting. I'm not into Quatermass' music. I'll check it out!

So Morse is a part of the conspiracy to DP into Rainbow. Who's the mastermind, Bruce Payne perhaps?

has anyone read the quote from Jon Lord in the new classic rock? Accepting the award for Classic Album for In Rock John stated he now realises what a mistake it was to leave such a great band as purple.

Strange, he seems to be regretting his decision.

Quote probably taken out of its context. It was only last week that he responded to the question "will you ever reunite with DP?" (in a Norwegian newspaper interview): "No, that is a closed chapter."

Actually chaps - it was meant to be a joke. Perhaps in rather poor taste - but I had been sitting with Ian and Ian and Ian and Ian, and I think also Ian, and I might have, maybe, had just the one glass of questionable wine too many. And BTW, Don is, without argument, the right guy. Doing a wonderful job.
Lotsa Luv to all.
