Northwinds
Recently found Coverdale's Northwinds, on LP, innersleeve w/lyrics. For some reason I had a feeling I would like this album, and I was not disappointed! In fact I was surprised how fine I think it is!
Saying this, I've never been a big fan of Whitesnake. There's something Whitesnake is missing, hard to point at, but something DP always had, and that makes them special. I tried out the collection Whitsesnake Early Years, just to end up disappointed. But Northwinds was exactly what I hoped for; warm and gentle sound, strong melodies, and Coverdale sounds like he's on homeground. Brilliant record. Too bad he didn't continue in this direction!
--- In heaven, everything is fine...

If you haven´t heard his first solo release, it´s well worth hunting down then, though the production is crappy.

Re: Northwinds
Excellent album. This and the first solo album, Whitesnake. Both definitely worth having.
Wouldn't have minded if he had continued more in this vein for another album or two, but I don't think there was much money in it.
Always strikes me as the equivalent to Glenn Hughes' Play Me Out album.
But guys after leaving Purple recorded albums that they wanted to get off their chest.
Glenn turned to the funk that was trying to burst out of him in Purple, while Coverdale turned to blues and soul. As he said back then, 'I'm going to sing on this album, not scream my balls off. I've been !@#$ screaming for years'.
--- What would you do, if I sang out of tune?

Re: Northwinds
I just picked up the two CD re-master of Snakebite and Northwinds. Absolutely brilliant! This release includes 4 extra tracks as well:
Whitesnake/Northwinds Re-master
I agree, wish David had incorporated more "soul" in his subsequent releases. Hole in the Sky is my all time favorite Coverdale track.

Re: Northwinds
I like the two DC solo albums more than perhaps anything WS ever did, save for a track or two.
Of course the albums don't feature players like Marsden, Murray or Lord, but the playing is good enough. And DC's singing so well.

Re: Northwinds
He may never repeat it, but at least Into The Light was a good attempt. It was an album that shed all the trappings of his hair-rock days and put vocals at center stage.
Unfortunately, the fact that DC is out touring as Whitesnake tells us pretty much all we need to know about sales of Into The Light and the response by people who thought the 1987 album was Whitesnake's first.
I'd love to see another Starkers CD where he just focuses on the two solo albums from the 70's and Into The Light.

Re: Northwinds
I haven't played this in awhile, but I have a long ride home from a gig this Saturday night and it will be perfect...after I play my standard Eric Johnson Venus Isle ride home CD. At first I thought it was too mellow but now agree with all the praise hear. It's great.

Re: Northwinds
DC posted on Twitter of plans for a special remix edition of NORTHWINDS.
