I don't know if he ever got as far as a demo, but I certainly remember the rumors of Coverdale being offered the gig.
Personally, I was glad John Lawton got the job, as he's one of my Top 10 Rock Vocalists ever.

He certainly rehearsed with Heep by all accounts, though like Ed I've never heard of a demo being made.

On another Heep-related topic, does anyone know if David Byron was ever considered when Gillan left the band in 73? Seems to me to be an obvious candidate.

Some info from a Denny Ball interview, that's somewhere in the net:

-----------------------------

Question: You were asked to join the band after John Wetton's departure, what really happened ?

Answer: The line up almost became: Denny Ball/Mick Box/David Coverdale/Ken Hensley/Lee Kerslake. They decided on Trevor Bolder and John Lawton. I have good memories of the rehearsal when Dave Coverdale sang with us. I don't think Coverdale wanted the gig in the end, but it was out of my hands, and I was very very disappointed not to join the band. At the time, Lee Kerslake wished that I had been joining Heep !

Question: Do you remember which songs did you play with Heep and Coverdale ? It would be great to listen to those sessions, were they recorded ?

Answer: The Heep rehearsal with Coverdale was recorded off the mixing console by the road crew at the time. These were just cassettes, and I don't know what would have happened to them. They were probably used at the assessment meeting which decided the eventual line up of the band. As for what we played at the session, most of it was jamming, with a couple of Chuck Berry songs thrown in for good measure. I can remember Lee Kerslake particularly enjoyed himself at that rehearsal !

Maybe this calls for a visit to the Uriah Heep official site. I believe they have a forum or at least a "Q + A" thing there.
Or maybe Mikkokoo(?) here on our forum has some more info?

Some music mag, can't remember which one, was pretty sure that Coverdale was all poised to leap into Ozzy's boots in Sabbath after the Purple split, can't imagine it myself!

Frankly I'm very glad DC didn't go for the Heep job, he was too good for them and Whitesnake were so much better!

Anders...After DP, I was approached by Sabbath and Uriah Heep...To be honest, I was'nt really musically keen on either...I say that with great respect to the musicians...who were, and are, terrific at what they do...The most interesting approach I had was from some gentleman asking if I would be interested in getting together with drummer Andy Newmark, bassist Willie Weeks, keyboardist Jean Roussel...and...Jeff Beck!!!...Oh, bloody YES, was my IMMEDIATE response!!!...Sadly, nothing came of it...Now THAT would have been the ticket!!!...However...I am very happy the way things turned out in my life.

I read somewhere that Coverdale then recommended Lawton to Heep, after working with him on the Butterfly Ball.

And a great thing that Lawton got the gig, in my non-humble opinion. We got some great music from that era of Heep - 3 studio + 1(?) excellent live album...
Of course, we can speculate to death whether or not Coverdale getting it would've had better, worse or indifferent results...
