When Whitesnake Was an Actual Band.....Way Back When.

Please don't let me be misunderstood, I do believe David Coverdale is the star of Whitesnake, but remember when Whitesnake was a real band and not just David and his backup musicians? That was rock and roll, plain and simple. Nothing he's done, save Into the Light, could possibly come close to the intensity and sheer musicianship of the Marsden/Moody/Lord,Murray/Paice lineup. That stuff is absolutely unbeatable. On second thought, Into the Light is nice, but no match for the classic 'Snake.

Agreed, though I respect Into The Light a lot.Back in the early days they were such a cool live-act.The interaction between Jon and David,Bernie and Micky,Ian Paice once got introduced by David as "The Stormbringer",Jon with his Porsche-sunglasses was rocking his organ, with a moog on top of it.There was no make-up,no bleeched hair and sun tan, simple dress code.A true band.

A true Rock N'Roll band....What happened to David? It seemed he got weird after Slide It In.

unfriendliness chilling my body...

I was upset about the changes after Slide It In.Someone told him that he'd ignored the US.market for too long,so he went for it that way.Sadly, the success confirmed his acting.I remember when I heard that Lordie had left for reunion,my thoughts were,go on with that concept and get Don Airey as the permanent organ player,'though one main piece of WS stage presence was gone, but I think it would have presented us a lot more likeable albums and concerts that way.
I felt as if he'd lost his way from '87 on.Every reason I loved WS for was none existent anymore."Into The Light"is a little return to the roots, but it's a bit late, isn't it?

But to defend DC,let's face some facts and mind the time when the changes happened. The early+mid eighties were the times of Heavy Metal. It was fashionable and "cool" for every heavy rock band, whether already established or newcomer,to have a thunderous guitar sound. It was hightime for bands like Judas Priest,Def Leppard etc.and Whitesnake was a band at this period which wasn't that loud and had a different sound, including a Hammond organ which was a stylish relict of the seventies.I know that David said somewhere in an old Interview, after Jon had left:"No way that there will be a keyboard solo".And Jon said on the Heavy Metal Pioneer VHS/DVD :"First I thought they were such a fine band, but then petty things started creeping in".
So maybe David felt under pressure while watching the huge success of these metal-guitar bands at the time and changed the concept to fit more in the current scene and be prepaired for the american market.A song like "Bad Boys"is a result of this.Later he became a Led-Clone,to try it that way.Of course, with eyes of 2003 most of us prefer old WS - I did all the years, despite metal fashion or not.

And Metallica came too in the eighties! Their first album was in my opinion nothing but s**t. The following albums then were the longer the better! Speed metal pure! emoticon

After Slide It In,I jumped over to reunited Purple, which still were one of my favorites next to WS and Rainbow.Old Judas Priest I liked a lot too,but most of the others were not my cup of tea.

I had a closer relationship to the music of the Purple family,Jon+David were my heros,Ritchie my alltime favourite guitar player. When you're young you often identify with "your" music and nothing musical on earth had ever touched me deeper than their music. It all started with Last concert In Japan which led me to them when I was about 14.

But David now seems fresh and much younger to me than in the old times! Maybe WS will find their way and form back, I hope so! But some records was incredible. To name some: Looking For Love, Children Of The Night, Is This Love... emoticon Superfluous in my opinion.
