Ian’s autobiography is one of the most entertaining things I’ve ever read. After I’d read one or two chapters I always found myself chortling with laughter. The man surely has a great talent for telling stories, though my fave drinking story is probably when he threw up his guts in this club over two poor blokes who were fighting on the floor.

Yeah, his book is great. That's why I'm looking forward to the next one mentioned.

I´d look forward to that too, wouldn´t I know everything that´s written there as I´ve read every word that was written on Caramba the last 4 years(including the back issues and stuff). And it doesn´t sound as though it would be much more than a printed collection of highlights of what´s written, posted and archived on the webpage the last couple of years.

Nonetheless I´ll get it anyway. emoticon

A bit late perhaps, but here is a transcript of the view of the one common factor to all incarnations of the Band: Ian Paice.

From Live Encounters DVD, Ian Paice Interview
Chapter 5: TBRO, Blackmore Leaves

Polish interviewer:

"….and played a very good gig here in Poland. But the day before RB sent a letter to the band. What was this letter about?"

IP:
"There’s always… well not always… For a long time there’s always been a friction between Ian and Ritchie’s perception of what Ian should be.

Ian has not changed. He’s always been the same guy. And Ritchie’s idea of what he thinks Ian should be has become a little more focused. And they just don’t see the world the same way.

And Ritchie just, I suppose, in his own mind decided he was not enjoying it any more. He felt that the control that he thought he had on the band was slipping away.

And I think it was, if I look back at it now, I think it was a bluff to see if we would throw our cards in.
We didn’t throw our cards in, so I don’t think the bluff worked.

I’ve got, you know, I look back, it is always hard when things like that happen.

That was the kindest thing Ritchie could do to us at the time that was to leave. It was very tough to take it on the night. But you know, since he left, we smile a lot more. And that’s worth so much."

My italics.

Take it from me, if you haven't seen this interview, along with the words in italics, it’s IP's little head bow and sort of shrug at the end that is the very sad part.

It's obvious that DP became a much happier unit when RB left. They deserved that, RB included.

At the other end of it, several DP fans have defended accusations against Morse's often - understatement - boring live playing with that smiling argument: "but he is always smiling". Yes great, but what does that have to do with the playing?

But I believe RB left at the right moment. All the guys in the band had been in the business long enough to not work in an unhappy band anymore.

a) No doubt about that.

b) A huge part of it retired with Jon Lord in 2002.

That reminds me of Beck and Cozy in the Motown studios in the early 1970s. As Cozy carries away the house drum kit, to replace it with his an engineer asks Beck: "You guys came to get that Motown sound, right?" Beck: "Yeah". The engineer: "Well, it just went out the door".

Re: "Friendly relations" - Blackmore & Gillan

Here's another spin on the Blackmore Vs Gillan thing.

What a lot of fans of most bands tend to ignore when pondering their preference for line-ups is how the two antagonists actually feel about working together and the pressure they come under to satisfy the masses.

Let me explain:
I'm in a band which has changed line-ups fairly regularly for various reasons. The previous line-up is the one which most fans tend to identify with. It broke up because of, among other things, a profound personality and attitude clash between myself and the former singer. It's fair to say that we really do not like each other. However, recently the band has been coming under pressure to get our former singer back and the prospect is not one I look forward to because working with the guy was sheer hell and the band didn't operate in any professional capacity with him there. BUT, his voice is what people remember and identify with. So, I am personally being told to put up with the guy for the good of the band, even though I know for a fact that the months ahead would be torture.

So when you look at it from inside a band think about how Blackmore and Gillan felt about working together, the pressure both would have felt over putting differences aside and working together 'for the good of the band' must have been immense. For that reason and because I can relate to both sides, they have my understanding.

It's not easy to operate with someone who has completely opposite views. In fact, it can be hugely stressful. I'm surprised they actually worked together for as long as they did given how they felt about each other.

Mr Legacy is quite correct - I can relate to all this sort of thing with problems my band faced this time last year. Our old drummer (and yes he was old) had lost his appetite for the band and his behaviour and playing became more and more erratic. To salvage the situation our guitarist brought in a new drummer. The new guy was technically brilliant and we played a series of gigs to great critical acclaim. However, it was obvoius that his temperament was the exact opposite of the old guy. He didn't take kindly to some of the things we asked him to do and, despite our best efforts, it was obvious it wasn't going to work. We parted company and now have a good solid drummer allowing me (keys) and the guitarist free reign to improvise and enjoy the music.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Richie's happy playing his medieval heart out and the rest of DP have given us (IMHO) some great music since.

Richie's gone - get over it.

I've got two hands, I can play that - Vic Savage, Spinal Tap.
