Gillan and Security Guards

One of my favorite bootlegs is Black Night in Denmark - 3/1/72. It also known as Machine Head Live as it is about 3 wees before the album release. (They do NOT play Smoke On The Water.) I recently saw the video for this amazing show. Wow! Many of the sounds that I thought were Lord on the organ were really Ritchie on his guitar. Paice is awesome. He has a massive scar on the left side of his chest under his arm. Anyone know what this is related to?

The opener is Highway Star. In it, Gillan says "Oy!" three times. I always thought it was a live improvisation for the song.

But now that I have seen the video, it is obvious that he is trying to get someone's attention off the stage right in front of him. He sings another few lines and at the 4 minute mark you can see him lunge over the stage and hit someone with the bottom of the microphone. Then he gives the person a serious finger wagging before he resumes the song. I assume he was "chasing off" a security guard who was bothering fans who moved up to the front of the stage. But it is not really clear what happened here.

1. Can anyone elaborate on this?

2. Gillan later got in trouble for doing this. When was that incident? Didn't it lead to his short hair? (He cut it for his court appearance.)

Joe

I know that he bopped a security guard on the noggin' with his mic at Pine Knob when touring with ELP a couple of years ago. According to a friend of mine, you could hear it pretty well.

I have no clue what became of that incident.

You can clearly hear him hitting a security guard with his mic stand during Speed King on the MiJ anniversary edition encore disc. emoticon

I was there and witnessed it. the security guard was being a real dick to a fan that jumped onstage. They guy jumped up there and bowed to the band repeatedly. He cooperated with security and got back off stage but the guard decided he was extra special (maybe he thought he was in law enforcement or something) and wouldn't leave the guy alone even after he was back off stage. Gillan bopped him on the head "lightly" with his mike (your could hear it). The guard was a "girly-man" apparently and sued Gillan. It went to court as I remember. But probably all that came of it was a warning to Ian. Anyone else know?

The case was most likely made to go away as quickly, quietly and peacefully as possible...much like Blackmore's arrest + prosecution in mid/late 1969 for apparently discharging pellets from an air rifle in the direction of the Royal Castle in Windsor...Blackmore reportedly appeared before the Windsor Magistrates on a firearms charge, which Purple's management successfully kept quiet for quite a while.
