Seriously however, maybe it's just me, but I can't conceive of any possible way that JLT surpasses Gillan, at all, ever, in any musical conetxt.

Right indeed. The big question remains though; who decides what's crap and what's not? That is also a matter of opinions, and you're entitled to yours. Like everybody else.
I can very well see JLT as a better singer than Gillan. Not better than Gillan was in his prime (which to my ears limits to the years 1969-72), but overall, throughout their careers. In the context of Deep Purple Gillan will always be the no. 1 singer, JLT will remain the least important one. But you say "at all, ever, in any musical context" and then I think this is a very open question. I believe it's fair to say that technically JLT is the best one out of these two great singers, some will disagree of course. But that's again down to a matter of opinion.
True, the first statemenst was in jest, but the second I adhere to most strongly. It is all subjective I know and i'm not trying to say I am right. But I really don't see much merit in JLT at all, his voice is mediocre and his public persona I find embarrasing. I don't see the 'talent', never have. Others feel differently, so be it.
