Not really. Jon mentioned big problems with David in an interview from 1976. And David said too, that they both went through a weird period at one time and neither of them really understood why. They solved these problems in early 78 I think...

Ah thanks,I didn't know that. But they must have solved them very well then,'cause later I repeatedly read the opposite.

Ritchie about Jon:
"He was a great dinner guest,my very favourite dinner company - and in the band he was great,he could emulate very well. But I don't know why,to this day,he doesn't come up with any ideas.I still find that awesome. You'd think that over a period of 25 years a guy would have one idea.I remember wandering over to him onstage one night while I was playing.I said something like,'The sound is relly awful! 'or' The lights are really bad' and he just smiled, kept playing and said,'Another day, another dollar...'"

Jon Lord reacted to this interview:
"I'm mentally disappointed that he chose to make such a stupid remark.Extremely disappointed.I thought that he had more class than that. It's basically stupid.I mean, you got to go to listen to my contributions. Some are better than others, but from a man who wouldn't listen to anybody else's idea's anyway, that's a rather strange statement.I am surprised, and I am hurt,of course!"
 Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord,1996.

Lesliescream wrote:"RB has asked Jon to join Rainbow,I have it in a book,Jon said it in an interview."

Here is an interview about this:

"-Is it true that Ritchie wanted you to join Rainbow?
 -Five times.
-And it doesn't interest you at all?
 -No.
-Would you use him on your album then?
-Sure,but then he would have to do what I told him to do(laughs).I really don't want to be a backround musician, and I wouldn't even be sure that I had a job because HE FIRES PEOPLE MORE OFTEN THAN HE CHANGES HIS UNDERWEAR.You would never know who would be in the band, whom you would socialise with.Because it wouldn't be with Ritchie, you never see him.I could be Freddie Mercury.I will never understand why he had to change it.Cozy Powell was a great drummer and Graham Bonnet is an amazing singer.I considered that band to be a very good one.He should have kept it.I just did some work for Grahams solo album and he told me that problem with Ritchie was that he kept telling him how to sing all the time.
-David Coverdale has said that he thinks that Ritchie may end up being the Frank Sinatra of rock'n'roll.
 -(laughs).That's funny,it could happen.
 -He never changes his style.
-No,but HE CHANGES THE BAND,BUT NOT THE MUSIC.But I don't want you to think that I have anything against Ritchie, that's not true and I like him.I find him very hard to work with but I like him.I also have great respect for his talent, but it hasn't moved in the last five years. He plays pretty much what he played back in 1975 but in my opinion not as good. And I think I know why.He doesn't have to fight anymore. The moment he encounters another opinion,he cange the band.So the energy might get lost in that situation. He just avoids conflict now, like the one he had with me in Deep Purple.I wasn't about to let him have all the spotlight and that resulted in all the duels that we had, which became a trademark for Deep Purple. He doesn't have that now in Rainbow. The only guy that used to be like that in Rainbow was Cozy Powell."
Jon Lord in Stockholm,1981.

Joe Lynn Turner's opinion about DP without his 'idol':
"That would be strange. As long as he is in the band it will definitely work as far as the songwriting goes.I NEVER SAW JON LORD PRESENT AN IDEA(!!!).IAN PAICE IS MORE INTERESTED IN THE MONEY THAN HE IS OF THE MUSICAL END RESULT(!!!).ROGER COULD COME UP WITH SOME GOOD IDEAS.I don't know, they did manage to carry on once before with Tommy Bolin, but that was back in the heyday.I THINK THAT RITCHIE FELT THAT HE KIND OF HAD TO CARRY THE WHOLE THING ON HIS OWN SHOULDERS.THAT THE OTHERS KIND OF MADE A GOOD LIVING ON HIS WORK.When he quit, maybe that was his way of saying,'Screw you,I don't need you!'."

"RITCHIE BLACKMORE WAS DEEP PURPLE.They can change a singer or a drummer without losing to much of the identity,BUT WHAT ON EARTH WILL IT SOUND LIKE IF RITCHIE IS NOT THERE?"
Joe Lynn Turner 1993-'94.

Well, it sounds pretty much like Deep Purple to me! They´ve made some great records without him.

By the way, I haven´t heard The Division bell, is it worth investing in?

If you like David Gilmour´s singing and playing VERY much, and you´re into progressive pop music, then yes.
