I kind of agree, but I kinda don't. I think they did porgress with Purpendicular, but REGRESSED with the following albums. Cascades, Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming, Rosa's Cantina, Richie would have never played that stuff. Imho, of course.

That's what I meant. I think Purpendicular is a brave album, ceratinly a milestone for the sounding of DP. They did not go thru a lifting at that time, they created a brand new sounding with Morse. They weren't afraid of trying stuff like Aciator, Rosas's Cantina. They actually did everything that was possible for a rock band on Purpendicular. There are some great ballads, great old school rockers, and - last but not least - some fresh and new stuff. To me, they didn't manage to follow that route at all, unfortunately. Plus their concerts started becoming same, lost the sparkle, magic and they are often boring. I very often skip most of the old songs when I listen to bootlegs for the second time, and sometimes I skip a certain song forward even during the first listening because it's getting boring.

Many young people think they witness the best band ever playing live. Sorry youg lads, you didn't hear much enough. I saw them live in every line-up except MkI and with Satriani. They blasted me in early 70s, that's when they were the best on stage. And it's not a nostalgia thing, oh no. They were awesome on the Burn tour and kicked ass in 1991 with Joe Lynn. Some of the 1993 shows were also extraordinary, if Blackmore was in good mood. Then I saw them live a couple of times during the Purpendicular tour and I thought: 'Yeah, they're great. New sounding, fresh and powerful. And new material can match with the classics.' A Castle Full of Rascals - wow! what a blast! Remember that?'

I know times change, they're getting older but I can see they could still play better (what I mean by that: more improv, more new songs for god's sake!). I believe in new songs. Even tough I'm not a big fan of Bananas, I'd rather hear them fighting for that album and playing even all songs from it live (not one night of course). I don't want them to be another Nazareth and UHeep - great bands, still in great shape but these days basing mostly on their legendary status within a small group of fans.

Ask Steve if he likes the long tours to Uzbekistan and Whateveristan.

And ask Gillan why the tours are so looong.
Tax evasion? Oh, no. Neeeever...

And ask yourselves why they brought in Bradford, the first "external" co-writer EVER in DP (Not counting one track on S&M). Lack of inspiration, I say. And they were afraid of making another lousy Abandon-soundalike.

Gillan wants to tour, get drunk and smoke some cigarettes. Glover wants to be with Gillan. Airey wants his paycheck. Morse wants to go home. Paice doesn't care.

There's something rotten in the state of DP.

i know Mr Gillan will tour till he dies but i think the guys love the band at the moment, babanas was a hit around the globe, exept for US and UK where we only care about pretty 17 year olds, because they have SOOO much talent.
I liked bananas and i can't wait for the next one, i feel sorry for the people who think the next one will be machine head 2. things change people!!

I agree with SneakyPrivateLee.

Pick three random tracks from Perp, and they'll beat the crap out of Abandon and Bananas.

The "magic" that so many of us can relate to won't come back, I think. DP today is something else. Maybe good sometimes, maybe even brilliant. The magic partly disappeared in 1993, resurfaced with Perp, and then vanished again when mr. Lord left.

I agree with this! While I like Purpendicular and Abandon quite fine, I though Bananas was, in many ways, a return to a more basic rock sound, which to me is what DP really is. Lets face it, the best DP albums were never more than straightforward rock 'n roll, nothing more. That's the essence of what they are.

As for what, or how good, a new album will be, well, I have realistic expectations. Any album will be made by a bunch of almost 60 year old men who have done this for about 35 years. I expect solid, good rock, but do I think somehow they are suddenly going to channel the sound of their youth back into the music? No. But they still do good music, and that's better than 95% of everything else out there. So whenever they decide to get around to it, and give us a new album, I'll be happy.

What is wrong with a tour to WhereIsItStan?
Does anyone have a map reference?
Because I haven’t been able to find any sports halls or stadiums yet… emoticon

The simple fact is doing a major tour in Russia makes good business sense.
Their tour there last October was pretty much the same one they did in the UK – the major cities. The only difference was the scale. They didn’t go anywhere obscure or outlandish, just the regional or state capitals.

I guess they went in October because most of these cities have Universities, the students are back by then, and the students probably form the bulk of their live audience. Also, the really harsh weather hasn’t quite settled in.

And this is where they sell the bulk of their albums, I would hazard.

But my pet obsession aside, here's the main point

Yes, agree entirely, and couldn’t put it any better. Let’s be realistic. This is where they are at, here and now in 2005.

They look and act their ages, they get on, they’re still active, they’re still creative, they can still perform, and they seem to be enjoying themselves.

And they’re all still more famous than any of their wives! Or children.

I’ve only got to look at Mr Osbourne and Co. once a day to make me feel thankful for what we’ve got! emoticon

But not Germaine Greer.

No..... Not an appearance on The Late Night Review on BBC2 on a Friday Night. That would be a fate worse than Celebrity Big Brother! emoticon

But it would fit with the pseudo-intellectual writer look!

POS
'I don't know how to do that kind of thing, but I'm sure I could put together a pub tour.'
