As time goes by Don is starting to fit in very well with this band. I would say more so than Steve Morse even, at least in the humble eyes of this reporter. Of course we all have our honest impressions. emoticon

I thought that on K2 he was deliberately playing in the style of Rick Wakeman emoticon

Re: Thoughts about Don Airey...

I think this discussion about Don is heading into the same direction like roughly 11 years ago when Ritchie was replaced finally by Steve. For a huge number of DP fans DP is also Ritchie.I heard in those years many people saying, I'll never go to a DP show because it is not anylonger DP.Exact those people are nowadays amazed when Steve is playing.I would make a guess that in 3 or 4 years many of those who are now against Don or don't like him as a musician playing with DP will change their mind.OK it is impossible to forget Jon but at least we should be as fair as it should be to give Don a real chance. This is a question of time and from my point of view he has all the time he needs.I was so lucky to speak a couple of times personally with him and he is an absolute great man, friendly and helpful and taking care about the fans.Don is Don and Jon is Jon.Both are great musicians but they are not the same. One can't copy the other.

Re: Thoughts about Don Airey...

am i the only one that thinks that since the 1984 reunion, john lord's sound was crap?

very weak and dull....his playing was predictable, and not that exciting.

now when you are talking about the early 70s john....o yea, that was amazing stuff.
his sound was much heavier then too, using more overdrive and less corny vibrato.

now don airey is in "DP", he actually got that heavy sound of machine head back and his playing is very fresh compared to jonh's.

but i still think the "DP" of the last 10 years just sucks....shoot me emoticon

Why shall we shoot you?that is your opinion and at least myself is so tolerant to accept that other people have other opinions. There is no reason for shooting or blaming someone just because he has an opinion which is not a mainstream opinion

Re: Thoughts about Don Airey...

i think it's not right to discuss his musicianship, as we all know with whom he played with, and the band he's playing with right now.

however, when i got the bananas album i expected a more screaming, rockin', that makes me say 'yeaaaaah' kinda hammond solos. god knows maybe he's a better player than J.Lord in terms of technique, but J.Lord knows the hammond better. so, hammond lovers like me(i adore hammond music.. in jazz,blues,...) could be a little disappointed with D.Airey's approach to hammond. i think playing hammond and playing an other keyboard-piano is a whole different thing. but all these don't mean Airey sucks, he still sounds great. and DP sounded, sounds, and will sound great anyway. it's just DP playing that makes the actual difference anyway emoticon so don't kill D.Airey, he'll handle it emoticon

I agree that Jon's sound on PS and HOBL was thin and not very exciting. I like what happened on _|_ though. He really sounded good. Live, I think Jon is always great. He is a true master of the Hammond but not a heavy synth player. I don't think Don has the same feel for the Hammond as Jon and I think it comes through in his playing. I like his synth work though but I would rather hear Jon play Hush any day.
