Hats off to Big Jim!

Just read in the paper today, that Blackmore's old guitar teacher, Big Jim Sullivan is on tour!

I didn't realise that he was still around, so I thought I'd do a quick search on him.

I knew he had done a lot of sessions, but the amount he has played on is staggering! Here's a list of the hit singles he plays on.

Also on his site, are guitar lessons!

So hats of to the guy. A true, if often uncelebrated, hero of music.

And you should check out his soloing on Who Do You Love, from the Green Bullfrog sessions. Exceptional.

Seconded, Rahul! That one track alone made buying the re-issue well worth it - for me! It should've been on the original, but what the hell! emoticon

It remains one of my favourite tracks from the sessions. Glorious!

Have you heard the Quicksilver Messenger's version of this song? They've taken up a whole side of vinyl with it! Superb stuff. Totally over the top.

So that's it then? Only myself and a talking horse are taking our hats off to Big Jim? emoticon

Re: Hats off to Big Jim!

Apparently he plays regular gigs in his local pub. A few years ago I had an email from somebody I used to work with asking, "have you ever heard of Big Jim Sullivan?" "Sure!" I replied, "he taught Ritchie Blackmore, but I think he's dead now." "I hope not," she answered, "because I work with his wife now and I'm going to have dinner with them tonight" emoticon

I saw him live in South Shields three years ago and he really is an amazing player. He played a mostly jazz set but it was pretty obvious he could play anything he wanted to; his encore was Johnny B Good with the guitar played behind his neck. Anyone who is a fan of good guitar music (not just rock guitar) should try to see him play.

Now that's the kind of 'hats off' comment I was looking for!

I'd be interested in checking him out if he comes up here again!

I'm pretty certain Jimmy Page has more work with Jim than any other famous guitarist has.
Hats off to Roy Harper(I mean Big Jim) emoticon
