Re: Turner, Hughes, Coverdale, Gillan? Who's THE MAN?

You only live once, and there is only one Child In Time...atleast he shelved it with dignity.
I'm looking forward to hopefully obtaining video footage of the Russian 2002 shows for historic sentimental documentation pretty soon.(DVD)
I just hope the quality is good...I already know he cut it atleast as good as he did on the 93 tour, having obtained the audio version...not to mention the phenomenal job he did in South Korea two years later when he had the confidence to sing it like he used to...or better (stunning to say the least),which reminds me,this song isn't to be sung by anyone but him, just as it shouldn't be played by any other than Ritchie on guitar...can you imagine a singer doing as poor a job on it as the guitar players that have attempted it?
Satriani didn't manage to do it much justice, neither has anyone else I've heard.(IMHO)

...but my older brother does an uncanny note for note of the MIJ version...heard him do it a thousand times,it's amazing how much he resembles Ritchie when he gets warmed up.

This is exactly contradictory to the topic itself!!! This is what I'm talking about! Constancy and quality over the years!!!! Not ups and downs!

But you never stated exactly what the topic was about at the start! Anyway the point is that Hughes went through several phases of not knowing what the hell he wanted to do with his voice. Joining Gary Moore and Black Sabbath for short, disastrous spells can hardly be considered as 'consistency' can it? Even if his voice was great he had just as many ups and downs as everyone else. Probably more so!
quote:

And why Hughes 'screeches and screams and whoops'??? Well, why a dog licks his balls??? Coz HE CAN!

Fair enough, but I'd rather not have to listen to him doing it. just because he can doesn't make it any more bearable. I'd hate to have him in Purple now whooping and screeching through current DP material 'just because he can!'
quote:

How many others can? Tell Gillan to do Child in Time now. No !@#$... way! Tell Hughes to do what he did 35 years ago. Sure, even better! That's what I'm talking about. Soul, rock, blues, pop, even metal - the man is capable of it all!
How many others can boast that?!

Sure we'd all have loved if Gillan's voice was as powerful now as it was in the early 70's, but at least Gillan tailored his compositions to the way his voice was sounding at any given time. He just wrote melodies he knew he could sing given the his voice was. Hughes on the other hand went through his soul phase and his rock phase and his funk phase alternating them over the years. That's not consistent either.

And to quote Jon Lord: "There's only ONE singer for this band and its GOTTA be Gillan!"

I am fairly confident Gillan is not losing any sleep about this topic. The facts are as clear as a Bagdad summer day, clear away all the smoke from the carbombs and errant US smart bombs and you will see Gillan easily survives, with Coverdale only slightly wounded. Hughes and Turner have absolutely no chance of surviving in this war. All I have to say is the battle rages on. emoticon

I don't think that's a particular reason to criticise someone. That sounds pretty good to me. emoticon

Anyway, I'm never very keen on this whole 'put one down to big up another' style of argument.

Yeah, it's sort of like a kind of 'verbal chess'...only at the end, there's no way for either player to ultimately 'check' or 'checkmate' the other. Whichever vocalist you favor, you're gonna favor no matter what anyone else opines/speculates/states as a 'given' (pick one - or two...or all emoticon ).

Gillan's the man!!!

And I have to agree with Celtic Legacy about Glenn. I've only heard him in Deep Purple & on his Burning Japan Live CD, but on that CD he just doesn't seem to know when to stop & I often find myself pressing the skip button.
He's got a great voice but then he goes & ruins songs with a whoop whoop or a lot of screeching!

Burning Japan Live is a - masterpiece! What r u talking about????!!!

Seventh Star is absolutely great. Also there is nothing wrong with Run For Cover!

And Gillan is great. Always will be. Screaming is not the issue here. But his best days are long gone! That's all. And that's a fact.

Just as Purple's were after Ritchie had left. HE was the AXEMAN for Purple. As weird as he is. We got what we got now...

'Then was then, and now is now. No things return'. Ian Gillan - Come Hell Or High Water - on tour 1993/94.
