They all are.
Though there will always be a pecking order as to the individual importance of each member and that is based purely on how each fan sees the band.

Where's Evans in the poll?
Anyway: Ian Gillan! ("Child in Time" and rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar").

"You're the man"
"You're the man"
"We're alllllll.... the MANNNNNNNN!"
man on the silver mountain that is
THE man is obviously Gillan. For without Gillan there would probably be no Deep Purple today.
Thanks Ian

Re: Turner, Hughes, Coverdale, Gillan? Who's THE MAN?
all in all it has to be gillan,as 7th heaven said without him there would be no deep purple now.
but, lets not forget the 2 great albums with coverdale and hughes
the highlights of the first 3 albums with rod evans.
jlt, a fabulous singer, probably not the best match for dp ,but there were some good moments on 'slaves and masters'
i'll throw this one in the ring, who is singing best these days?
sorry ig but imho it has to be glenn hughes, whose voice is phenomenal
