Extended songs or shorter songs

I was watching 2 people on YouTube go over their favorite DP albums. One of the individuals didn't like it when DP did long extended versions of their songs such as Mandrake Root, Wring that Neck, Space Trucking and YFNO. The other person liked the songs stretched out. Any opinions here? As for me, I loved it when they really stretched out their songs. They were never boring!

If I wanted to hear the songs note for note, I would just listen to the albums. I love when bands stretch things out and improvise. It must suck to have a short attention span and also not truly understand the joy of music.

Well quite, being a Purple fan may prove difficult if one does not enjoy their live presentation. Given that it formed such a fundamental part of their identity, especially in the early days.

Re: Extended songs or shorter songs

Let me put it this way - I like extended songs... but I like extended SONGS, not EXTENSIONS among which song appears in. emoticon So I dont have the issue with extending Hush with (let´s say) few minutes jam, I loved 12-15 mins Speed King´s from late 90s and (example from other band) I love for example 15 minutes long Heaven And Hell from Radio City Music Hall in 2007... but I dont like songs used just as vehicle for half hour mandness. Is it understandable? There is huge gap between "extended song" and between madness which (by coincindence) partly includes a song too! emoticon

I like long versions of songs like Mandrake Root, Wring that Neck etc! If that's madness, Great!

I am not certain that I totally follow your argument. Given what you said how would compare Speed King from the late 90s to, say Wring that Neck or Mandrake Root from 1970? For a direct comparison assume SK from LATO and Wring.. and Mandrake Root from the Space Vol 1 & 2 bootleg, which I think is on Youtube if required.

When you look at my examples, those are songs including jams, which fit into the structure of the songs. Particularly that example of Heaven and Hell from Radio City Music Hall.... Speed King as song based on rock´n´roll classics is perfect one for adding a little jam based on other rock´n´roll classics, but for example, what I dont like is "borrowing" part of Fools solo for using it in Space Trucking madness (where it makes absolute zero music sense in terms of context of song itself)- I would MUCH rather hear it IN performance of Fools, which never happened. I mean "let´s do a song.... and extend it some fitting way" instead of "let´s do a crazy jam with doubtful sense and use this song as vehicle for it".

I think the "Fools" solo fits perfectly in Space Truckin. One of my favorite parts of the live version.

I don't think the current audiences would sit through and enjoy 20 minute Space Truckin'.

I'd like to see more variations, shorter versions of a couple of songs, verse, chorus, next, verse, chorus, next. And, variation as to where the keyboard solo fits, intro, during or outro.

I agree.

Look at "Made in Japan"; "Made in Europe"; "Live in London" and many more.
