Actually - I saw Jeff Beck few weeks ago and I cant imagine him playing with Deep Purple. He is obviously great guitarist, but sorry to say - zero charisma. He is almost Eric Clapton type of coldness.

I find that quite astonishing that you mention Becks lack of charisma when you are such a big fan of SM and DA ? who great players that they are have the charisma and stage presence of curtains !!! To be fair SM is a smiley curtain emoticon

Steve has tons of charisma and is very connected with crowd! Don does many unmusical things and jokes I do remember from shows - like his little pirouette during Well Dressed Guitar or prettending "hand poker face" thing when he sometimes makes a mistake. Its about connection on stage. I remember his comical facepalm during Lazy introduction where he made a funny flaw which caused Roger and IP laugh on stage....

In terms of classic "rock guitar star" charisma - noone (and I really mean NOONE) beats Tony Iommi. When I saw Ritchie with BN in 2006 and with Rainbow 2018 - my impression from him was "such a weirdo....". In one moment he is sweeping stage with broom (on Blackmore´s NIght gig) in comic way.... in other moments he looks anger when he leaves stage after ending set with SOTW abruptly (Prague Rainbow gig).

SM and DA have absolutely no charisma in comparison to the legends they replaced in DP.
Blackmore and Lord in their prime were true performers as well as being virtuosos(just ask DC he has often said they taught him his craft) ,Steve and Don are quite simply NOT performers .
The examples you have given of Blackers are ridiculous as in one case with BN its not a rock show and in the other case he was well past his prime by then sadly.

Tony Iommi is a truly brilliant guitarist both live and in the studio, i love the guy ,but the most charismatic guitarist in rock???No not in my opinion and I've seen him many many times.

Blackmore(in his prime)
Brian May
Michael Schenker
Jimmy Page
EVH
Ronnie Wood
Angus Young

are just some of the guitarists i have seen live who are more than a match for Tony as far as charisma is concerned.

I think that as in many other cases - we have different definition of what we think that defines "charismatic guitar player".

I saw Angus Young - and could not stand him... He is clown in worst imaginable meaning of that word, nothing less, nothing more. I found him VERY annoying.... Brian May? No.... Even Queen fans knows, that one of his "performing flaws" is, that he is unable to hide mistakes... emoticon Actually - I always tend to watch Roger far more than him. Ron Wood is BORING one compared to Keith... There is professional release of their 99 No Security tour - that Keith opening of Jumping Jack Flash is just CHARISMA personified and its glowing through TV screen. Mick would not be able to mesmerize like him. When I watched that performance for the first time, I had to repeat that opening maybe five times - that´s how COOL it was.

There are different kinds of charisma obviously, but for me, all of them are related to ability to connect with audience (f.e. Freddie Mercury or Elvis or Robbie Williams for example). Actually - when I saw Heaven and Hell and Sabbath.... I actually didnt care that much about Dio stage persona or Ozzy´s shouting and whatever clowning he made... I watched Tony and his aura is just stunning and I never experienced anything close to that with any other guitar player. And its actually very interesting that he doesnt move that much on stage, he just plays.... but you cant stop watching him.

In case of Steve - I always loved his connection with particular people in audience - especially kids! He always wanted to make people happy and really cared about doing that! His positive attitude was actually very catchy....

Actually in my list.... I would put Steve maybe on 5th place. From guitarplayers which I saw, it´s going to be probably Iommi, Vai, Richards, Slash.... on other hand - Clapton was really boring one - I felt like he didnt care about his audience at all. It felt like band rehearsal with 16 thousand people in audience. In case of RB - I overview what I saw.... I didnt have an opportunity to see him in 80s or early 90s.

Once again were just going to have to agree to disagree emoticon
i do agree on Clapton though, fine guitarist but horrible self centred man.

Yes Keith is indeed charismatic in his own drug addled way but Ronnie for me is much more charismatic loved him in the Faces too.

As for SM he seems a lovely guy but really has never struck me as a charismatic guitar hero? smiling at kids FFS thats hardly rock star stuff is it?? emoticon

Its astonishing that we both like the same band ptr we are like polar opposites as people it seems?but then if we were all the same the world would be bloody boring emoticon

You always have a tendency to "ignore" overall context and point out just an example as major point. I said that Steve have been great on stage because he always had great connection with people in the audience... And I pointed out that he has been very attentive especially to kids. Its just small PART of overall point, not the point itself. emoticon

aye ok whatever mate, and you have a tendency to have no respect for your elders(i was following DP and many other classic rock bands long before you were even born ) but lets just agree to disagree or this is gony turn into another long boring argument sonny emoticon

I won, I managed to get the most quotes into a single post.

just beat you emoticon

Yep, I'll bow out for good (from this thread).

To quote another band, when it comes to this forum…… It’s the same old, same old situation….. It’s just sad!

Sorry to see Steve go, he’s been great for the band, but I totally understand and respect why he have to step down.

Love you Steve, welcome Simon. See you this October!!

Since Steve announced he's leaving to take care of his wife(What a great person), I've been listening to all the Morse era albums. The only album that disappoints is ROTD and that's due mostly to the way is is mixed. Favorites in no particular order are Purpendicular, Abandon(their most under rated album IMHO), Now What, and Whoosh. Live, the Purpendicular and Abandon Tours were excellent!! Hellfest 2017 has sounded better to me with each listening. If it wasn't for Steve, we may not have gotten the Concerto 1999 shows and Concerto Tour. Loved it!! They've been my favorite band since 1973 and always will be. If they choose to continue with new Guitar Player. I will without a doubt buy whatever they release.

ROTD and Bananas suffered due to their production. Their content was quite excellent. To me, the best of the Morse era albums. Purpendicular is still my favorite MKMorse album, though, because of what it started.

any news on Roger re-mixing ROTD? He said it was happening....
Bananas isn't quite as bad in terms of productions, but it could do with a re-mix/master. Way too loud for a start...

It would be nice. I could use a remixed vinyl version of both.

Only 2k were pressed and most of us won't have a chance for ROTD.

" No, its not going to be footnote"

Well, you surely will try to attain that for them in 25 or 50 years time.
Unlike themselves who clinged on playing the old classics.

Even people like me kinda begged to make that different but hey , guess what, they never listened because they , I think, KNEW what setlist would sell the most.

I dont come often here, its too much the PTR site.
Glad its over and done.

My final comments to Mr Morse; a million deep felt thanks, for your great contribution to my all time favourite band, for your musical refreshments, and your smiles. Now you didn't end up as the last guitarplayer in Purple, but you have one thing common with the two founders Blackmore and Lord only; you left by your own choice (we all know Gillan never left, he only had a vacation or two).

This year I've had the misfortune to walk in the same kind of shoes as Mr Morse, and they only walk a rough path. Truly my best wishes to you and yours, Mr Morse, and thanks again for all the fun!

He left for a completely different reason than Blackmore and Lord (who left for different reasons as well). And Coverdale left by his own choice as well - to be told by Lord and Paice that there was no band any more to leave.
