Re: Turning to Crime - first impression

Picked it up an hour after my local shop opened on release day. Made it up to about halfway through Let the Good Times Roll. Haven't gone back to it since (i did ask Alexa to play White Room, however).

Not my bag.

Got it a few days ago. have listened to it 3 times and have to say I like it a lot! Favorite songs are: Let the Good Times Roll, Shapes of Things, Battle of New Orleans and White Room. There are no songs I would like to skip. Judging by the album cover, It looks like Gillan goes to to same Hair Stylist as Keith Richards. emoticon

First impression... writing this while listening for the first time, on youtube.
Sure thing I'm gonna pick this up one day!

THIS is a bit of fun! Excellent selection of songs, very diverse collection.

I think they all shine here, even Roger gets his unmusical voice to some good use emoticon A great bit of fun indeed.

At first impression it's hard to pick favourite tracks. Had to re-listen to Dylan's Watching The River Flow, only to be struck again how well Dylan always deliver his lyrics (no one can do that any better) but still the DP qualities ain't ding any harm to this song either.

Now ok, White Room stands out. Mee oh my, how wonderful!
Didn't think that classic could ever be improved, but here I am proven wrong. A reason on it's own to buy this, not only on a CD for the car, but also on LP!

Ok, logging off now, everything from here is a bonus!

Love this, best thing to come out of the covid-hysteria so far!

Would definitely enjoy more true DP crimes!

Still listening to this! The only track I skip is "the battle of New Orleans" which sounds like something off a kids nursery rhyme cd. "Jenny take a ride" is a little oddly paced and sounds a bit rushed.
Ian Paice plays harder and faster than usual maybe because he didn't get to set the pace like he does with the jam led writing method.
Ian Gillan sounds great , lovely clear delivery.
Don Airey brilliantly over the top.
I think some of these tracks would sound great on the Jools Holland show, maybe not in the live DP set, ok maybe part of the encore.

I believe DP let Roger sing for one show in 1972 when Gillan became ill. Now that he has sung the opening verse on the Battle of New Orleans Roger can officially say he was Lead Singer at one time of DP. emoticon

Some good stuff here. They acquitted themselves quite well, for the most part. Gimme Some Lovin', though, is a bit lame. Steve Winwood was exceptional on the original. Not much oomph from IG, kind of dull. White Room comes off pretty good and IG sounds nice, but still lacks that rich tone and smooth sound that Jack Bruce had. Both those songs would have been perfect for Gillan in his prime. The rest of the tunes are real good and IG does a nice job. Overall, pretty damn goood. emoticon

Really like 7 and 7 Is, Oh Well, Jenny Take a Ride, Dixie Chicken and especially White Room. White Room is among the best the band have done. The medley works fine too.
