I love them both emoticon picking one over the other depends on my mood at the time.
THOBL is a better album than PS IMHO and 87 is quite simply a brilliant album.
I think some of the criticism of 87 comes from people who cant get over the change of direction from the early bluesy Whitesnake?
Personally i loved every era of Whitesnake musically but hated the poodle perm girly man image of the hair metal era emoticon

I always liked the Hair Metal era. Sure, the dress was goofy and the hair was poofy, but, damn, the music was excellent. A great time for solid rock and roll.

Half of '87 is really good (IMO) Still Of The Night, Give Me All Your Love, Is This Love, Looking For Love, Here I Go Again (the performance on S&S = Jon Lord & DC excepted - is dire)

But the other half is rubbish. Bad Boys - hair metal at it's worst, Straight For The Heart - all histrionics and no substance, Children Of The Night - Just terrible, You're Gonna Break My Heart Again - filler and Crying In The Rain - woeful compared to S&S all bludgeon and no subtlety.
