I love Clarke in the band Tempest though. Great stuff there! And his bass on Uriah Heep's "Why?" from the DEMONS AND WIZARDS sessions has to be heard to be believed what an awesome player he is.

Clarke is great, Tempest are great, he co-wrote The wizard on Demons and wizards, and that's his voice singing the middle bridge in the song but I'm quite sure that on the song Why? it's Gary Thain playing.

Don't be so sure. It's not Thain on the 10 minute version of "Why?". First sign before we even get to technique is the bass tone. That is without a doubt a Gibson EB bass which Clarke employed in those days. Thain played a Fender. Second clue is the the flowing melodicism of Thain's style is completely absent in that bass line. Clarke was always a disciple of Jack Bruce and the plunky attack he borrowed from Bruce is evident on this song. It's a technique developed from playing a double bass. Thain never exibited that style.

Ok, I'll try and relisten to it with all this in mind. I always felt that bass part sounded perfectly right for the sale of playing Thain had.

By the way, I just listened to Nightwing third album, Black Summer, and in the liner notes it says that bass player Gordon Rowley was flown from the States to England in 1977/78 for a bass audition for Rainbow. Never knew he was considered for the part.

Never knew he was considered either, but I guess it shouldn't be a surprise seeing the way Ritchie seemed to struggle with finding a suitable bass player until he seemed to find contentment with the return of Glover to his fold. Heck, even bassist Jack Green was officially in Rainbow for a very short time in late '78.

I love Bob Daisley but have grown on to appreciate Gruber.
