Re: Tony Carey played on Slaves & Masters?!
First time I hear about this .
IIRC, it was already discussed that Jon didn't play on Fire, Ice and Dynamite. But it's the first time I hear that he didn't play at all on the album and that it was TC (after all TC, who didn't quit Rainbow on friendly terms!) who played.
Must admit I never listened too carefully to this record (which is the absolute lowpoint in Purple's catalogue IMHO) so I can't actually judge the styles.
After all, Jon played on the tour. There are also several pics Colin Hart did publish on Rainbow from these sessions where Jon is involved. So to me it doesn't seem overly likely that it's true what Tony is telling here.

Re: Tony Carey played on Slaves & Masters?!
Talking about Colin - you may now try to contact him on FB and ask directly whether it was true or not. As a former member of the team, he surely is more free to disclose some details that he couldn't do previously, who knows?
As for photos - there are not too many of them available from the actual recording sessions (if at all...), so maybe there's some hint of truth in Tony's story?
I heard too, that Jon was about to leave DP at some stage around the S&M period, being unhapy with the direction the band took. An interesting story... we know that drums in Cut Runs Deep and FI&D are played by the drum machine, now we hear that the keyboards are serviced by Tony Carey. What comes next?...

I think in one of the posts I've linked above, TC says Jon played on the demos, but not the actual album....

Re: Tony Carey played on Slaves & Masters?!
I'm sceptical. That must be JL on the Cut Runs Deep and JLT has said that he contributed to the writing.

Good sideman can play whatever he's asked for - that's his job. And to contribute to the writing and to play the final version of a song, that's two different things. Unless Tony Carey is not a pathological liar (a "mythomaniac"), his story may be considered credible.
If you know Yes' album "Union" - lots of Steve Howe sounding guitar parts were in fact recorded by Jimmy Haun, so why a similar trick could not be repeated (to a bigger extent) on equally marginal "S&M"?

Re: Tony Carey played on Slaves & Masters?!
I merely said I was sceptical. In the same way as Ritchie is difficult to mimic the same is true of Jon.
It is not guaranteed that the person purporting to be Carey actually is. I mean posting on a Status Quo fan forum? Really? that sounds dubious to me.
if he did maybe it was demo's or something similar.
Oh and I've checked the credits and no mention.

Re: Tony Carey played on Slaves & Masters?!
If true, it was done masterfully, as no-one has had any doubt for 30 years.
Just think of all the reviewers praising Jon’s ‘inimitable’ style on the record😁
What I am personally skeptical about it the fact that there’s been dozens of band and band members biographies over this time, and the best place to reveal this is…drum rolls…a post on the SQ forum that has no relation initially to DP at all, and it’s mentioned in passing whilst discussing other things.
If it is indeed Tony posting there, it would be strange behavior, indeed - strange if false, strange if true.

that's actually what I'm thinking too...
You'd think that this would have gotten out by now, and that a SQ forum would not be the place it was revealed
having said that; it's fairly well documentet how Jon wasn't keen on the album (and JLT / line up change), so maybe he did "walk" after the initial demo stage of the recording?
My impression of Tony Carey is that he's a straight shooter who tells it like it is.
Again, a strange way/place to spill the beans, but TC does not strike me as a guy who would downright lie about something like this...

Re: Tony Carey played on Slaves & Masters?!
Perhaps the CD title is a give away. JL being the master.
