No band cares less about symbolic things than Purple.
Could be the case, could not be the case.
The only thing I'm sure about is that they don't have a clue

Agree?

You'll never know - however, in my opinion, this really may be their last LP, the one they want to make a tribute to their own musical heroes with, and in this way "close the book".
Fair enough, Gillan & Glover are 76, it's a small wonder that they are going strong for such a long time, don't expect miracles and let's enjoy what we still can get.

They started with cover songs and may end with cover songs. So they will come full circle.

For myself I think I'll pass this one.
Bought all previous albums, but hardly listen to them.

Re: Turning to Crime - an album with covers?

From Simon Robinson:-

Wanted for questioning
Slow catching up on this story due to techie issues at DTBHQ, but it turns out the upcoming DP album “Turning To Crime” is a collection of cover versions rather than the expected / hoped for new studio set. Vintage songs for the most part too, going back to Love who Episode Six used to cover in the late 1960s. It’s a curious move, and as it includes four songs on our own lifetime’s play list I think we will await the audio teasers (and really should anyone be allowed to touch Oh Well?). Still if The Big Sky Mudflaps can have a bash at Dylan’s Watching The Rover Flow, along with over two dozen other bands, I guess DP have every right! The Stones also did this apparently, on an Ian Stewart tribute album in 2011. In Stewart’s judgement it was “the only decent thing Bob Dylan ever did”. Ouch.

Anyway, here’s the official sales blurb – tip to Edel, maybe ask someone who is a native English speaker to write these in future?! Thanks to everyone who sent in the data. Someone in France is advertising a white vinyl pressing on ebay for 102 euros, though hey, that includes shipping! Release dates vary, some say Oct 6, others Nov 26. Cover art is as per our previous posting.

“Released in the midst of a pandemic, Whoosh, the latest album from Deep Purple was a real success and kept the group in a positive energy and full of adrenaline despite the complicated global context. This forced the members of the group to stay at home but above all to think differently about their way of creating music together. This led them to design Turning to Crime, a very special new project and a first in their career.
Entirely composed of “covers” of great rock classics and musical jewels carefully chosen by each member of the group, Turning to Crime includes titles by Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Bob Seger but also some nice surprises. Turning to Crime represents the moods of the group when they embarked on this project, and Deep Purple once again surprises its fans with an album different in every way from what Paice, Morse, Gillan, Airey and Glover have been able to offer. until now.”

01 Volume 1
02 7 And 7 Is (Love)
03 Rockin’ Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu (Huey “Piano” Smith)
04 Oh Well (Fleetwood Mac)
05 Jenny Take A Ride! (Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels)
06 Watching The River Flow (Bob Dylan)
07 Let The Good Times Roll (Ray Charles & Quincy Jones)
08 Dixie Chicken (Little Feat)
09 Shapes Of Things (The Yardbirds)
10 The Battle Of New Orleans (Lonnie Donegan/Johnny Horton)
11 Lucifer (Bob Seger System
12 White Room (Cream)
13 Caught In The Act (Medley)

Interesting comment. For myself I know none of these tunes (with the exception of Oh Well and White Room) so for me it's a new album.

As for me, this is also good because Deep Purple have never done something like this before and if famous bands like the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Rush, Rage Against The Machine, Metallica, etcetera have done it, why can't Deep Purple do it?

The complaint that I have are...
1. The title - I'm sure there are better titles.
2. The cover - They could have hired ROGER DEAN or HUGH SYME, that old men photos should been in the inner gatefold instead of front.
3. The songs - some of 'em are too old, "Battle of New Orleans"?

But overall, it's great, I loved the idea of covers album, simply because they have NOT yet done that.

Another thing they have NOT done is a real "double album" 2CD/3LP, I hope that's next.

Apparently, the last song “Caught In The Act” is a medley featuring songs by Freddie King, Booker T. and the M.G.’s, The Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin and The Spencer Davis Group and it came to life with the band, for the first time in their career, recording the songs remotely during the lockdown.

I was hoping for "Volume 1" and "Caught in the act" to be originals...

(Easy to guess that Green Onions, Satesboro blues and Gimme some loving are going to be featured here)

I recall that earlier in the year or late last year there was list of songs put together by Deep Purple, spotify or such like. I recall it was songs chosen by the members to listen to during the COVID lockdowns. I tried googling it but can't find it - any ideas.

Ihaven't been here for a long time, and now I have to go to work. So I can't read the whole thread now. Perhaps it was written before. "Turning to crime" means the complete record consists of stolen material. And if it is: Why didn't they cover "Black sheep of the family" ... That would be a real crime ... Just my thoughts

Re: Turning to Crime - an album with covers?

I already pre-ordered it on CD and I'm saving money for the vinyl.

As for ME the question is... Will it beat "Bananas" or the album "Turning To Crime" will be the weakest Deep Purple album???

And for the OTHERS the question is... Will it beat "Slaves & Masters" or the album "Turning Tov rime" will be the weakest Deep Purple???

It will be answered in November.
