Live in Osaka 29 June 1973
Been listening to this, the last MKII show of the 1970's, the past few days. My impression is that Gillan sounded like he might have been drunk, Lord, by his playing, sounds pissed off and doesn't want the show to end, RB sounds bored half way through the show, Paice is his always excellent self, and Roger does a really nice aggressive solo in ST. Overall it still is a very good show.

It's a good show. I think that IG sounds a bit worn out at times. He sings with passion, though, for the most part. I think that the band sounds pretty good overall.
If you think about it, this is the end of DP as we knew them. The next time that they appear, we get the Coverdale/Hughes combo. I never cared for MKIII. Their vocals and attitude were the complete opposite of Gillan and RG. Blackers, Lord and Paice were fantastic as usual, but the other two were just meh. Their total mangling of MKII tunes was the pits. Too bad that MKII couldn't take a few months off, come out with a new album and hit Cal Jam fresh. Had this happened, I think that they would have been right up there with Zep in the Pantheon of Rock. Oh, well.

I agree. It would have been nice for them to take a break after this show so RB and Lord could do their solo stuff then reconvene in Feb 74 to start working on a new album. It would have been nice if it was MKII headlining the CALJAM. As for MKIII, I loved Burn, hated Stormbringer and thought they were great live but not as great as the mighty MKII. I also like MKI over MKIII.

I agree totally. The Hughes/Coverdale combo just grated on me. Blackers, Lord and Paice carried the band until Ritchie left. MkI were much more enjoyable to listen to.
Either way, Coverdale was much better in Whitesnake and Hughes is lucky that he didn't join Tommy the way he was going.

If Tommy had lived, I think him and Hughes could have put together a wonderful band as long as they stayed off drugs.

A very big "If". Don't forget that GH was sh*gging TB's girlfriend at the time which might not have made for good band dynamics.

If they could even have been coherent by that time. I'm sure that it would have been a !@#$-show. They would have come out on stage, Hughes would have babbled some incomprehensible nonsense, squawked out a few mangled, dopey lyrics and stumbled about. Tommy would have stood there too stoned to do anything but strum a few notes before falling over. Eventually, they would probably have to be carted off stage. I think that fans would probably have gone just to see how long they lasted before passing out. That probably would have been the highlight of the concert. Either way, their drug addiction and antics proved to be the end of DP.

I don‘t think Tommy would have been interested working with Glenn. After the DP split he said: „I am not friends with anyone of them.“
