It's a futile exercize because you can't judge art by purely quantitative parameters, but then again, you can't define qualitatively "art" unequivocally either, particularly an art form like pop music, which has not been around for much and we lack the distance needed to make a sound judgement like we can with painting or sculpting, or even classical music. Having said that, I think these lists can be partially useful if they can lead a few kids to research some music from the past and find out it wasn't always the crap it is now. What I don't agree with is the comment on the Beatles - you mention bands that lasted a blink of an eye (Cream, Hollies) and others that were the quintessential 3-chord bands (Stones, Who), which I personally find rather boring. I believe the Beatles had many things going at the same time: great songwriting with timeless melodies, great use of vocal harmonies and also harmony in a music theory sense, very experimental (just think of their progression from the first album to the last) and a succession of great albums with no lemons like hardly anybody else did - all in a span of a decade. It's not my favorite band, but I do listen to them and am amazed every time I do because of that mix of simplicity and complexity that has never been done so well by others. nondisclosed_email@example.com (mtb7)Wed, 09 Jun 2021 07:13:19 +0000 Re: Deep Purple - 46th most popular band in the world!https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p522908,from=rss#post522908https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p522908,from=rss#post522908Another nonsensical list.Im always astonished that the Beatles generally are found at the top of such lists too??I like some Beatles songs (usually when covered by others )but NEVER listen to them and only have one friend who is a fan of the band ?I personally have never seen what all the fuss is about ?They were good wee pop group like many many more at the time ,George Martins visionary work elevated them somewhat but for me there were far better bands in the 60s eg The Who,The Stones,The Hollies,Cream and many many more IMHOnondisclosed_email@example.com (lightintheblack0)Tue, 08 Jun 2021 10:02:06 +0000 Re: Deep Purple - 46th most popular band in the world!https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p522907,from=rss#post522907https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p522907,from=rss#post522907Ranking bands like they're sports teams with a metric of performance (wins, time, points etc) now traded for sales, Facebook likes and streams, what, a load of bollox. Hall of Fame mentality, nothing to do with talent, art, or quality except in some vague sales related correlation. It's also a matter of the awareness of those who put such lists together... Thanks God they somehow noticed Deep Purple anyway Yes, some of these bands have not even toured outside North America, or rarely. Where Purple have toured just about around the globe, like Asia, Oceania, Russia (Russia is like a continent in itself), South America and even Africa. And they seem to have a following everywhere too. For example several big tours in South Africa as one example.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Concrete god)Sun, 16 May 2021 18:24:17 +0000 Re: Deep Purple - 46th most popular band in the world!https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p522857,from=rss#post522857https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p522857,from=rss#post522857It says "most popular" - which not necessarily means "the best" or "most influential".
