Re: Make up your own crappy release

Ian Gillan sings Nessum Dorma , double A side single. The definitive version with very special guest performance. Maybe with a bonus, one of the many performances of "smoke" the guest singer witnessed.
Perhaps with a bonus insert with quotes from Pavarotti "the nights I sung with Ian Gillan"

I think that it would have been much better had it happened in 1970. Not bad, but certainly not the definitive version.

No doubt about that JSA1 ,the things is Ian Gillan IMHO was every bit as talented as Pavarotti in his own field, but unfortunately he never looked after his gift and he blew his voice out way too soon.Pavarotti on the other hand looked after his gift till the end .The video demonstrates that perfectly in that Pavarotti was 10 years Ians senior and he blew him away.

I agree litb. To my ears, no other singer in the 1970's came close. People always talk about Robert Plant, and he was excellent, but Gillan blew him away IMHO. Sometimes I think that Gillan, just Like Ritchie, never knew how good they really were/are. The MKII line up, IMHO, were the greatest ROCK band of all time!! They simply kicked ass!! The only ones that didn't realize it were them.

Shows just how much tastes can differ. All of those are some of my favorite songs by the band.

The real problem was that he kept blowing his voice out. First, not listening to his doctors and joining Sabbath. Next, going right into the Purple reunion from the Sabs without rest. Got axed. Got some of his voice back and put out some good albums and concerts, but started screaming more and then back with the Purps. Something about Ian and Purple. He seemed to beat his voice up. Maybe trying to match Blackers, doing those high energy HS kind of tunes. He seemed to get much better for a while after Morse joined, but he just can't help that scream-fest stuff. I've always been a fan and he is the person who got me into Purple because of JCSS. It's just a shame how he didn't take care of the beautiful voice he had. emoticon

Totally agree JSA1, shame really but i guess the lifestyle of a Rock star is different from that of an opera star.
Gillans drinking and smoking im sure had an effect as well.
There is youtube footage from Japan in 78 of early Gillan the band with Steve Byrd on guitar, and vocally Ian is very much the Gillan from 70s DP, but even by the Glory Road tour in 1980 the damage was beginning to show on Ians vocals ,he was still a great singer back then but part of the top end had gone and his voice had become more nasal IMHO

One might even go back earlier to 1973 when Ian's stamina/top end started to dip. Case in point he couldn't sustain "the scream" in Strange Kind of Woman" NY show in 4/5 1973 vs SKOW in MIJ 1972.

Possibly? but I always put that particular 73 performance down to it being a tired dispirited Gillan, perhaps due to the by then huge tensions in the band?He looked shattered and somewhat unwell at that show IMHO
He was still singing brilliantly and hitting all the notes in the IGB, i personally didn't really notice a big change until the Glory Road tour.
