Leslie West

Leslie West RIP.

He died after suffering a heart attack in his home near Daytona, Florida on December 20, 2020, rushed to a hospital in nearby Palm Coast but never regained consciousness. Aged 75.

One of my favourite tracks is "Hang Me Out to Dry" (Ian Gillan, Leslie West) where he played guitar - licks and rhythm work, but interestingly not the solo which was Steve Morris. Apparently Leslie played on some other material during the Toolbox sessions, but for 'for aesthetic or technical reasons' this wasn't used. Hopefully this will appear on an extended CD release (30th anniversary edition).

Giant of a musician. He also rerecorded and sang Hang me out to dry for one of his solo albums.

He was an excellent guitar player. I didn't know he played guitar during the Toolbox sessions. I also hope this will be released.

Yeah, would be great! If the market was what it used to be 20 years ago we could hope for a 2cd/dvd reissue together with one of the pro filmed shows from that tour, when they were also playing some of the "Repo Depo" songs. I remember buying Toolbox when it came out and it felt such a vindication for Ian, screaming his head off, while Purple were weakly promoting S&M. To have Leonard Haze on drums was also great: another underdog doing great after being discarded by his main band (Y&T) for silly reasons.

Toolbox was Ian proving just how good he was. I always wonder what S&M would have sounded like with Ian. It appears that Leonard (Lenny as Ian calls him) was fun to tour with according to Ian. I wonder how much unreleased stuff Ian has.
