Re: Rapture of the Deep: 15th Anniversary

I always thought "Girls Like That" would have been a good for David Lee Roth.

Well one thing you can't say about Gillan's lyrics is that they aren't any good. Always a very good part of their albums is the lyrics.

Not on these tracks.

True in the first case.
"Girls Like That" sound in places like an alternative take to Gillan's "Nothing to Lose" from "Naked Thunder" LP. Not that bad cut though. From the same album I would rate "Junkyard Blues" or "Don't Let Go" as strong candidates to the "Worst of Deep Purple" LP emoticon. Hopeless production of "Money Talks" and "Clearly Quite Absurd" needs a mention too.
"MTV" is quite a decent song, with some witty lyrics.

My main complaint about Clearly Quite Absurd is that Don's solo seems to just take off at the end of the song and seems to start to build nicely and then abruptly ends.

Probably my favorite tune from those sessions would be "Things I Never Said." It sure came together as the tour progressed.

I'll pick eight that never fail me. LP style...

Side 1
1. "Money Talks" 5:31
2. "Wrong Man" 4:53
3. "Rapture of the Deep" 5:58
4. "Clearly Quite Absurd" 5:25
Side 2
5. "Back to Back" 4:03
6. "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" 4:18
7. "Junkyard Blues" 5:32
8. "Before Time Began" 6:30

Good album for being a bunch of slick demos.

I totally agree with you zen2, that's what I think the problem with the Morse-powered Purple, too many songs, a very long studio album. If your not going to release a "real" double album (that is 75 minutes or more, a 2-CD or 3-LP), then make it shorter, 35-40 minutes that is good for just one single vinyl like "Perfect Strangers".

"Purpendicular", "Rapture of the Deep", "Now What?!", "Infinite" and "Whoosh!" are all released in 2-LP package, but in reality it's a single album and all released in single CD.

All can fit in a single vinyl, except maybe "Purpendicular", but the sound will be compressed, so they put it in a 2-LP package.

I'd replace Junkyard Blues with MTV but a good selection overall.
