Joe Bonamassa

Never really liked him or his playing.
Thought he was an arrogant guy, showing off with a different guitar during each song. One of Glenn’s crew members could stand him. Saw them (BCC)in Antwerp, had seen and spoken Glenn on several occasions, but Joe seemed also a very nice guy.
But wasn’t too much in his music. That changed the last year. I made a song list of about 20 songs and the list is growing and growing. He will never be my favorite guitar player, but I really like his playing. Especially live he knows to stretch songs (like my favorite band did).
His latest song When One Door Opens is really great. Starts off soft, getting a little louder (I always hear a small snippet of Concert For Group and Orchestra) and then Sabbath riffs kick in.
Really looking forward for it.
What are your thoughts about Joe?

I liked him in BCC, and only if he didn't sing as I find his nasally voice quite irritating. His playing lacks an emotional edge as well, too often his solos constitute too much of the same picked runs across scales that don't do much for me. The basis of blues based playing is the emotion, and while he is technically proficient that is the very thing it lacks in my opinion. His records also tend to sound very glossy and overproduced making the whole feel more like a product rather then "band gets together and lets it rip".

So he would be a perfect fit for a certain band that uses the same picked runs across scales?

All joking aside.
I understand your point of view, I stated that he will never be. my favorite guitarist, but for some reason I started to like his relaxed style of playing. And a lot of songs I really like. I wouldn’t mind if Glenn and Joe would share more vocals.

Love him. I only lack a couple of his studio records. Sure, he's not the genius some want you to believe he is, and I think in his already long list of albums he never produced a real straight masterpiece yet, but in every album I can find 3/4 great cuts and a lot of enjoyable moments. Live he's a monster, maybe sometimes a little too cold for my tastes, but still a marvelous player. In a few words, a lesser Warren Haynes: that is the whole deal, a complete genius.

I really like it. Concerto and Child in Time, Iommi and at times he sounds like David Gilmour singing. If the album is anything like this I'm in for it.

More generally speaking, I think his last 2/3 records (Blues of desperation, Redemption) are better than the first ones.

Not too familiar with his solo work (though the 2 recent tunes are solid, Conversation With Alice n' this one), but i gotta say, my favorite BCC songs were with his vocals. Song Of Yesterday is sublime.

His rendition of Lazy with Jimmy Barnes is also good, I think (from the Re-machine head tribute album a few years ago):
