rediscovering MK Morse DP
Im still having to go to work during this half hearted lockdown in Scotland, but was off on holiday last week,
and since my wife and i couldn't go anywhere we ended up working in the garden
So armed with my headphones on whilst working away I have found that MK Morse DP is the perfect accompaniment for painting the decking and fences
All joking aside i actually really enjoyed listening to those albums and have found a new appreciation for them ,
i dont listen to the classic DP albums much at all these days as i have heard them so many times over the years, and i tend to listen to classic DP live albums when i want my DP fix.
Listening to the MK Morse albums again was quite refreshing .They are good albums with good performances by all ,
even though i still kinda find SM to be repetitive in that you kinda know whats coming with his solos ie he using the same fast runs on most .He is a brilliant guitarist though and delivers some brilliant stuff too.
Order of enjoyment ?
1.Now What(just a brilliant album from start to finishIMHO)
2.Infinite(SM best work with DP IMHO)
3.Abandon(Love it MK Morse at their heaviest)
4.Purpendicular(Mixed bag of brilliance and ok for me)
5.Bananas(solid enough album)
6.ROTD(some great songs and some not so great )
all in all every album is enjoyable .

Re: rediscovering MK Morse DP
I like all of them, except many of Steve Morse's guitar solos. Get a real hard rock guitarist please!!!
This is how I currently rate and rank the albums.
1. Purpendicular (10++)
2. Now What?! (10)
3. Rapture of the Deep (10)
4. Abandon (10-)
5. Infinite (10-)
6. Bananas (10-)
By the way, I discovered that I liked Steve Vai's guitar solos in "Fool For Your Loving" in "Slip of the Tongue" than in the "Ready & Willing" album.

Welcome to the club! I tend to agree with your analysis; I'd rate them like this:
Infinite
Now What
Rapture of the deep
Bananas
Purpendicular
Abandon

Glad you managed to enjoy your week off, I spent mine listening to the Marillion discography.
MK Morse has some great moments, certainly his guitar playing is always top notch.

Wasn't April Fool's day two weeks ago?
I am pleasantly surprised to read this.
As for me,:
1.Now What(hasn't gotten stale at all. Love it)
2.Purpendicular(pop it in every 6 months. Still a treat)
3.ROTD (some surefire gems plus filler, but with better production, the filler would be elevated)
4.Bananas(solid enough album)
5.Infinite (nothing could've followed Now What, imo. A few solid tunes, but mostly an afterthought to me)
6.Abandon (An enjoyable half album)

Re: rediscovering MK Morse DP
i know this has come as a bit of a surprise for some(myself included ) to hear me say i like all of those albums, but I suppose my initial problem with Mk Morse was that Blackers wasn't there! and i found it kinda hard to see the band i had grown up with as DP without him.
He is my all time musical hero and by far my favourite guitarist, he for me is just a completely unique genius.
Then of course Jon left and made it even worse and even less like DP for me.
And i guess this kinda swayed my thoughts on the material they have released with SM.
Over the years though I've had to accept that this band are still around without Jon and Ritchie and now i do find those albums very enjoyable they are good solid and at times brilliant rock albums.
Ian Gillan is a great artist and though hes well passed his best live, he still delivers superbly and uniquely in the studio.
Paicey is well just Paicey and instantly recognisable, a brilliant talent
Roger is just cool and a very fine bass player
DA is a brilliant keyboard player no doubt and has at times brought his own personality to the bands material rather than simply cloning Jon
SM is a truly brilliant guitarist but just lacks imagination at times IMHO when soloing with DP,he has though still recorded some wonderful work with the band both live and in the studio.
Anyway stay safe everyone lets hope we all get through this horror fest soon.

Re: rediscovering MK Morse DP
I'm glad you've found enjoyment in the Morse albums Litb. It was a big let down for when Jon left so I didn't give Banana's a chance. These days' I've been listening it a lot. My favorite Morse albums in order:
Purpendicular
Now What
Abandon
Banana's
Infinite
ROTD

Re: rediscovering MK Morse DP
I personally don't have the problem many of you have, because I discovered Puprle with Morse on guitar in 2009. The first time I got in touch with Purple was when I accidently watched the Total Abandon concert on TV, so Morse was part of my first impression of Deep Purple. At first I didn't really like Blackmore's style, but that changed dramatically over the years. Still, for me it's quite easy to just compare In Rock and Now What?! without any sentimental feelings.
My Morse-Era rating would be:
1. Now What?!
2. Purpendicular
3. inFinite
4. ABandOn
5. Bananas
6. Rapture Of The Deep
