The other thing is that, as we become more detached from the experience of wars we become more risk averse as a society, so ten deaths today have a larger impact than hundred had a century ago. We really can't compare it to war. If we do that, where does it end? The Spanish flu killed more Americans than all of our wars in the 20th century combined and as many civilians worldwide as died in WWII, not counting military deaths. Two totally different causes. We need to compare it to other communicable diseases, other than something like AIDS, which you can't get by somebody breathing on you. I'm hoping this starts coming to an end and we can start getting back to some semblance of normalcy. We'll see. nondisclosed_email@example.com (JSA1)Sun, 03 May 2020 16:41:51 +0000 Re:https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p521088,from=rss#post521088https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p521088,from=rss#post521088JSA1 - I hope you are right, and indeed it could be milder in absolute terms than some of the previous pandemics(but we still have a long way to go before we have a vaccine, a cure or herd immunity, so who knows how much these numbers may still rise) but we needed an unprecedented effort to keep numbers low. I would add a few hundred thousand from China who has reported just over half the cases reported in the UK and you can't trust their numbers. With over seven billion people (Closing in on eight billion) in the world, just over three million comes out to around .00047. I used 3,300,000 divided by seven billion. It comes out to less than 400 cases per million worldwide. I think that this will be a mild pandemic compared to other major pandemics in history. Just my two cents.nondisclosed_email@example.com (JSA1)Mon, 27 Apr 2020 15:32:49 +0000 Re:https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p521009,from=rss#post521009https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p521009,from=rss#post521009I don't feel great about this, thouh I have no reason to complain. Lots of people suffer these days, and I do feel sorry for them. That said, what worries me most is not the corona virus, it's the economy. All the shutdowns are very problematic. C19 will disappear sooner or later, hopefully sooner, but the economical crisis this leaves us in will last for years, perhaps decades. Recent news from western Africa reports that 33 million people are starving badly because corona-restrictions means food can't be brought out, or gets too expensive. In South Africa police seems to be free to shoot anyone who perhaps should not be in the streets. At least they won't die from the virus. All countries do not go this far, but everywhere people suffer badly these days due to corona-restrictions. I applause any will to save lives, but perhaps there actually is something like too high a price, after all? Personally I do not worry very much about corona virus. I worry about corona blinders. All the major problems that most likely will cost milions of people their lives all around the world, because our media and politicians lose other issues out of sight. Understandably perhaps, but still dangerous. We seriously need to develop strategies to deal with diseases without closing down all activities for months, because that wil end up killing much more people that any virus. I'm sorry for sharing my dark view on this. On the brighter side of things, I do my best not to focus on corona problems these days. I bought myself a new guitar recently. Ordered back in february, not in stock at the time it arrived a month later, a brand new Fender Stratocaster, duly marked Corona, California. Of course. To improve sound further, I already invested in a new chorus pedal from tc electronics, named Corona Chorus. What else. Ok, now these are nice warm days, so I had myself a beer, a mexican Corona beer. For relaxing in the evening I enjoy a glass of spanish wine, noticing it's named Coronas. And to really escape all real life worries, I watched a Disney cartoon with my niece. She favoured Rapunzel. Princess of Corona nation. I'm about to go slightly mad. But I have nothing to complain about, really. I do hope that you who live closer to corona troubles get through well. And that we all will, when time comes to re-focus on everything else in life. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Atle)Sat, 25 Apr 2020 03:08:07 +0000 Re:https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p520886,from=rss#post520886https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p520886,from=rss#post520886We’ll go to gigs in bio containment garb😎 Seriously, it will be a mess until we get a vaccine - only positive is that this is so huge, that they will speed that up significantly.nondisclosed_email@example.com (mtb7)Tue, 07 Apr 2020 08:31:51 +0000 Re: Re:https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p520884,from=rss#post520884https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p520884,from=rss#post520884quote:Concrete god wrote: quote:mtb7 wrote: It's not just about being open, it's about having clients. Don't lose hope, lots of people recovered from this. Please, correct me if I'm wrong, I heard that if you recovered from covid19, you are already immuned from this. Sadly - it´s not truth. According to our chief of state emergency staff (he is army epidemiologist - we are very glad that he is actual leader of current measures which are very strict in our country, but almost all people understand and supports them), it´s not the case according to present knowledge of the virus (which is still relatively unknown). He is doing regular press conferences and during the very recent ones he gave us actually three critical information (from experience of our doctors and specialists): - it seems that immunity may possibly be created in case of patients which were exposed to large amount of virus and therefor it seems as crucial aspect of condition of patients suffering from this illness - larger concentration of virus means much more serious cases. If people survive serious condition of their illness, these cases after recovery, they might be sort of immune against the virus, but if people are not conflicted with this and have only mild symptoms (or no symptoms at all - sadly there are Cov-19 positive people who have no high temp, no cough, simply nothing, but they are infectious - and this is the most dangerous aspect of current crisis), no immunity is based on that - you can be infected again by that. In our country, first two very serious cases, were taxi drivers - and according to first investigation, it seems that car air-condition played a big role in this, it led to decision that all ACs in public transport is shut-off. If you shared your car with someone in last weeks, shut it off too please. - WHO has a standard of two negative tests after which people are considered as recovered and completely ok. According to our doctors, this is highly dangerous, because those people may remain infectious. In our country, they changed it - after two negative tests, you are still remaining in home quarantine for week or so - and after that period, test is made once again. They realized they were cases with two negative tests with people who became positive again.nondisclosed_email@example.com (ptr)Fri, 27 Mar 2020 20:11:03 +0000 Re: Coronavirus talkhttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p520832,from=rss#post520832https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p520832,from=rss#post520832I never thought I'd experience pandemic in my lifetime. JSA, unfortunately there is no exaggeration whatsoever...today we had close to 800 dead in 24 hrs...considering the US population is 5.5 times bigger than in Italy, it would mean 4.4K dead in the US in one day alone (one and a half times Sept. 11th), and with only a relatively small part of the country heavily impacted. Tomorrow is almost certain to be worse, and the curve does not appear to slow down at all. Every government has acted slowly and insufficiently, because each and every one of them was scared to stop the economy for a false alarm and get punished by us in the elections...this is where governing by polls shows its limits, to put it mildly. Now, they bring coffins out of the city of Bergamo with military trucks because there are no resources there to proceed quickly enough with cremation. Stay home, look at the Spring unfolding outside, think strategically in terms of having to go outside as little as possible and enjoy the thousand things each one of us usually has no time for. Fdr...honestly, I don't care whether those who tell us to stay home have cut funding for public healthcare or not in the past, I know what you are saying is broadly speaking correct but this is not a game of hindsight and who was right - staying home is what we can do to stop the spread, so irrespectively of who is saying it, it is the correct thing to do. The fact that it is so little that we can do only speaks about the very limited weapons we have against this, not about what politicians did ten years ago.nondisclosed_email@example.com (mtb7)Sat, 21 Mar 2020 22:50:45 +0000 Re: Coronavirus talkhttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p520813,from=rss#post520813https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p520813,from=rss#post520813quote:dp344 wrote: I live in Holland, in my opinion the government doesn’t do enough. (I'm posting on this board as reckon more people will see it here) I'm in the UK (Scotland) and government closed all bars, clubs, restaurants yesterday. They also announced a huge financial package to support people in these and other affected sectors. I'm no fan of the current government and they have been criticised for dragging their heels in this crisis, but I am so glad they have now intervened in this way. Hopefully it will save many lives and jobs. My eldest son and his girlfriend both work in the bar trade so it was looking grim for them before this intervention. Myself and my wife are both in stable jobs (local council IT and teacher) and my daughter is a nurse so we will probably be ok, but I really fear for the elderly and vulnerable and people at the bottom in our society (homeless, zero hour contracts, people doing casual work).
