I'm of that mind that (while it would appeal to me) Coverdale simply CAN'T sing like that anymore. He can do songs like Heart of Stone and Can't do Right that are largely in a very low register (low mid)... but honestly those early WS songs require a bunch of mid-range he simply doesn't have anymore. Flesh and Blood is a surprisingly good album (for what it is) and for 2019 it's about as good as you're going to get from the rock and roll version of David Coverdale. We won't ever get the 1984 version of DC ever again, and quite frankly the mega-selling 1987-89 version of himself is long gone. I've spoken to several non-fans of DC who actually really life Flesh and Blood. The album surprised me. Frankly I'm not sure he can do much better at THIS stage in his career. Moving forward if Coverdale wants to hang it up no one would blame him. I don't see him going that direction, personally ... but you never know. One area I can see him substantially cutting back on is touring. They already do less touring dates than they even did in 2013. With all of his health issues the last handful of years (knee operations, a flu that hospitalized him) I can see him reducing the touring to almost nothing. I can't see DC ever reuniting with Bernie for anything substantial. Frankly it would have happened by now, and DC singing Trouble on Bernie's solo album may have to suffice. If Coverdale DOES go into a blues album or whatever, like he did on his three solo albums, I can see him doing it with hand picked guys. Something like Into the Light. Even if he does that though ... people will still complain about his voice. That is not going to end. The state of his voice is what it is and it's sad but it's life. Flesh and Blood was a much better album than it had any right to be and that's great. How many more surprises does David have left in him? I guess that is the question. I agree with most of this. Flesh and Blood is, for me, the best Whitesnake album since he started Whitesnake again in 2003. I also believe he can still surprise us but we'll see. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Wojak)Mon, 29 Jul 2019 10:21:25 +0000 Re: Re:https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p519513,from=rss#post519513https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p519513,from=rss#post519513quote:danielb wrote: As long as DC still has good hair and charisma people will turn up even if the band does the singing for him. The magic is gone, they are still capable musicians (Paice especially, Gillan’s voice is terrible). If I only had a time machine. I agree with you to a large extent. I first saw WS in 1981 and my biggest regret is that I wasn't old enough to have seen them in 1978-1980! I saw WS at least once on every UK tour after that up until the Purple Tour which I missed due to a work emergency. I do like a number of tracks on Flesh and Blood, but I'm undecided as to whether to buy a ticket if WS do tour the UK next year. I don't feel any huge sense of connection to any of the current members of the band although they are all decent players and are doing a good job of presenting WS music. The bottom line is that the reason I have been a fan of the band for so many years is because I think DC had an incredible voice. Coupled with his charisma and stage presence (as well as a brilliant band), there wasn't anyone in the same league (IMHO) in the early to mid 80's. With the voice gone, then all that's left for me is seeing DC on a stage (because there can't be many more tours), and hearing the songs performed live one more time. I'd be going in the knowledge that I'm going to hear a pretty ropey vocal performance and when the singer is the reason you're into the band, then that's an issue. I suspect I will buy a ticket but fully understand why you didn't. And for what it's worth, I also agree very much that we all have different ideas on what makes a great WS song. Personally, I think Hey You is a really mediocre song, but respect that others may think it's wonderful. That's the beauty of music- some songs appeal to some people and not others. I first saw Whitesnake on the Lovehunter tour in 1979 and was also blown away by DCs voice and stage presence ,he did of course have an awesome band around him too, but it was very much the DC show ie he was very much the band leader, and thats the way Whitesnake have always been.Though the Moody Marsden era did feel like more of a band than what came after . Whilst i understand Old Timer that its DCs voice that drew you in you must have also liked the music he produced?I mean i think Celine Dion has a great voice but i bloody hate her music!!Obviously the voice matters but the music has to be to your taste as well surely? nondisclosed_email@example.com (lightintheblack0)Fri, 26 Jul 2019 17:06:31 +0000 Re: Re:https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p519499,from=rss#post519499https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p519499,from=rss#post519499quote:Banditbanger wrote: quote:Concrete god wrote: quote:Banditbanger wrote: I’ve been a fan of DP and WS (and Rainbow, and...) since I was 12. The magic is gone, they are still capable musicians (Paice especially, Gillan’s voice is terrible). If I only had a time machine. If you don't like songs like Heart of Stone, Hey You or Can't do Right, then you don't really like WS at all.. And these are among quite a few great songs on F&B. IMHO. We each have our own taste I suppose... I don’t like SotT album either, and 1987 is also not among my favorites. Heart of Stone is IMHO the best song on F&B and there are a few others that are quite good, but somehow the wanting to listen to them just isn’t there. As for not liking WS at all, that is a statement that would require you to see inside my head or at least know me well, I suppose. Such statements really do nothing to further conversation and just show your inability to accept that anyone can have an oppinion different to yours. It reads suspiciousely like “If you don’t agree with me, you are not one of us!”. Not a good way to think ad act IMHO. When WS reformed in early 2000s, I was thrilled and the live gigs in the first decade of this millenia were great. DC’s vocal was still strong and a treat to listen to. For me personaly, he is one of greatest rock singers of all time (together with Gillan, Dio etc., I never liked Hughes so much although he has grown on me in the last years. Never much cared for Robert Plant either, which hasn’t changed). Unfortunately, years of strain of performing (coupled with lifestyle) damage the vocal chords and DCs vocal if far from what it used to be. To me, the albums are also declining in quality, really good, memorable songs are few and far between. The last live gig I went to was on The Purple Tour, but this year I decided not to go, despite many of my friends persuading me to. Flesh and Blood did not make a very good impression on me (first WS album that I stopped listening after a couple of runs, although in hindsight Good to be Bad and Forevermore were not much different), and after watching youtube videos of the early gigs it was obvious DCs voice was/is shot. I think that there is a real effort to disguise that with other members vocal contributions and lower volume of Coverdale’s voice, so when you are standing in the front rows it is harder to notice than when listening on youtube. Plus, the atmosphere is always great on WS gigs and fun is guaranteed. But, to be frank, the real magic of WS for me was always Coverdale’s singing. With DC's voice gone, one might as well go watch a Rock of Ages style band performing WS's music as a tribute? What's the difference?    nondisclosed_email@example.com (Concrete god)Fri, 26 Jul 2019 06:29:38 +0000 Re: Re:https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p519491,from=rss#post519491https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p519491,from=rss#post519491quote:Banditbanger wrote: But, to be frank, the real magic of WS for me was always Coverdale’s singing. Thats the internet for ya. Back to comments - I also think Hey You is a cracking tune. Its a shame we didnt get Slow an Easy which follows it on the TV highlights. nondisclosed_email@example.com (stuartcuk)Thu, 18 Jul 2019 21:38:05 +0000 Re: Whitesnake at Downloadhttps://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p519421,from=rss#post519421https://bdeeppurplefanforum.runboard.com/p519421,from=rss#post519421quote:Old Timer5 wrote: Daniel- I don't think there are many of us who post here who would deny that DC's voice is not in great shape.
