Re: Gillan
maybe, I've heard it said IG liked to be on the road to get away from the other half, and 'have fun'. sure, must have taken its toll on his voice

Re: Gillan
Still on Gillan,
Drummer
on the Edinburgh dvd, McCoy says Ian Paice auditioned for them before Mick Underwood. Not something I was aware of before.
Finances
On the money issue, Phil Banfield on the Gillan ‘HS/Career retrospective’ Dvd claims the band always got paid, and challenges the former members to provide evidence otherwise.
It seems to me the Gillan band members weren’t aware that IG himself was not that well off around that period, despite his history. Hence having to join BS for a year to make some money after the DP reunion floundered in 1982.
His career choices were therefore founded on the belief that at some point DP would get back together, and he’d be ok financially from then on, hence pushing so hard for it.

I think the claim around being paid wasn't that they got paid, more than it was about the amount they received.

Re: Gillan
Incidentally I have been listening to Gillan Live at Reading Festival 1981 and after the sound was sorted during the opening song IG sounded fantastic.
Well worth a listen.

Re: Gillan
Happened across the video for nightmare recently, great song….which lead me to listening to the whole of Double trouble. Had forgotten how good it was. Particularly Men of war, Sunbeam and Rip your spine out.

Re: Gillan
Fabulous album! I just love the most "slightly proggy" attitude of the Gillan band and Double Trouble is just perfect in that. Colin Towns, what a talent...

I agree with all of this. DOUBLE TROUBLE has grown to become my favorite Gillan album for just the reasons you stated. Gers fit in perfectly and even provided a little of Blackmore-styled soloing in places. Also, there are moments on this album that find Ian laying down some of the most jaw dropping vocals of his career.

yes, re gers his solo on sunbeam is amazing! love the riff too.
towns makes the band though, all these highly musical , slightly quirky themes he brought to the table.

Re: Gillan
All those Gillan band albums are outstanding - some of the first albums I ever bought, way back in the day (on cassette of course ).
'Double Trouble', whilst being a fantastic album (the studio side anyway; Gillan live was mostly a racket!) is marred by the lousy production - 'Magic' sounded much better and slicker by comparison.
Regarding Gers - he is a fine guitarist, but it's gotta be the albums with Bernie (RIP) I prefer. He was a player with a very distinctive sound and presence. However, I remember Ian saying at the time of 'Double Trouble', how Torme was too Hendrix influenced, whilst Janick was more Blackmore styled which sat better with him then.
Also worth investigating is the (admittedly short) Pete Barnacle/Steve Byrd era. 'The Japanese Album' is a favourite for many fans, and if you want to hear a GOOD live performance from the Gillan band, check this out:
