For what's it's worth - I'm pretty sure ticket sales are on an upward trend for recent Deep Purple UK tours

Orchestra tour at O2 in London in 2011 - did not open upper tier at all
O2 2015 lower tier/floor full and some upper tier occupied
O2 2017 - selling upper tier blocks that were blanked off in 2015

When I was DP at NEC in 2009, they only used half the arena.
2017 Birmingham NIA - not a total sell out but most seats apart from the back of the upper tier seat at the back of the arena

Good turnout at Manchester Arena I believe

Scandinavia was more or less sold out. 5 shows in total.

Helsinki sold out (7100), band in top form and Gillan also.Yes he reads lyrics from notebook for the new songs, but I think he has done it like that since Rapture-tour

I think that they have sold far more tickets this time than previous tours.
I cannot remember the year/tour but I have been to the NEC in Birmingham when half of the arena was curtained off and the other half was only 60% full.

I was at Glasgow Hydro last night. It looked pretty busy to me. It's a 12,000 seater venue. Purple normally play the Clyde Auditorium (Armadillo) which holds 3,000.

I'm sure there's a lot of fans who haven't seen Purple for a while but bought tickets as it may be the last time to see them. I'm one of them (haven't seen them live since the orchestral tour in 2011).

Last night was a great gig. The band were on good form, but Don Airey was on another planet. He was amazing. Gillan did fairly well, better than I was expecting. I was only conscious of him reading lyric sheets in Birds of Prey. I've got to say I wasn't really looking forward to the encore (Hush/Black Night again....) but it's this section of the show where they loosen up and improvise and it was great.

Europe were very good, but got little back from the audience. John Norum was superb.

I really liked Cats In Space. Would like to see them do a full set in a smaller venue.

Come on guys.... When I wrote that Don is current leader of band and his playing on concerts with DP changed radically since NW?! recording there were people who didnt believe that - let me take this as confirmation of what I wrote! emoticon

Musically in 2017 DA and SM are so far ahead of some members of the band, however on this tour IP has been in excellent form too.

I haven't seen them on this tour, but I bought the Hellfest 2017 Lp and I really enjoy it. Of course the music is great, but I thought Gillan was real good too. The TfB, Fireball, Bloodsucker opening is very powerful, and on the new songs he doesn't sound like he's reading the lyrics from a sheet, but seems to be fully IN the song.

I frankly didn't expect much from this release, but this is a good surprise to me.

1) We already know that everything you write is pure divine wisdom. You needn't remind us of that at every occasion.

2) When I did a review of NW?! at a German DP forum, I agreed to someone who had written than Don Airey is the star of the album. Of course the latest two albums have his handwriting in a similar way as the classic Mk II albums have Blackmore's handwriting.

3) About Airey's role at the live shows I can't judge. Did he stop playing the same solos every time? However, if he's the leader now, that can't be a bad thing after Gillan having been the leader for about 20 years.

Yes(*). At one point I thought he was going to go into Star Wars but he didn't. His solo spot was simply stunning. Having the close-up of his hands on the big screen just added to it. Amazing musician.

* He did play a couple of Scottish tunes that he might have played before (I Belong To Glasgow and Amazing Grace) but in general I didn't feel his solo was retreading old ground.

He did play a variation of the same solo he has played since the Difficult To Cure Tour in 1981, however he has changed some parts of it, and thankfully didn't play the Star Wars part.

Edit::: However I did think that he was excellent at Birmingham, and with SM and IP rattled the show along.
