We were in Manchester for the show on Saturday and felt the energy of the band was outstanding with Paicey driving them along. Gillan hit every note to my ears and was solid and the screaming in bloodsucker mainly blocked out by the incredible sound from the band. Met some mates after the show who had never seen DP before and they were well impressed and that for me is a good gauge for a show . My brother and his mate wanted more old stuff which is fair enough because they are casual fans. As for the song sheets , I think birds of prey is the big stumbling block for Gillan and made worse by the big screens showing him reading nearly all the lyrics , maybe time to cut away from Gillan in this song. I admire Gillan but feel he has not done himself any favours over the years but you have to admire him for being up front with no backing singers and few vocal effects to help. No need to ridicule him , he is the voice of Deep Purple.

But who has ridiculed IG? The performance at Birmingham was excellent by the band, good from the singer. I find it disappointing that singer reads the lyrics from a note book but that is my opinion.

If people are basing their opinion on the BBC show then they will be disappointed as that was very mediocre. I was kind of worried after watching it but the Friday night show in Birmingham bore no comparison, the first hour positively fizzed along.

We went to the show in Birmingham last week and I was pleasantly surprised. Of course the musicality in the band now comes from SM and DA, they are the best musician these days, but I have to say that IP performed well too. RG has always been very steady.

It is very clear that the "weak link" in the band is IG, and that he is apparently forgiven however poor his performance is, but he wasn't too bad in Birmingham. The set changes have helped him, but of course his voice has pretty much gone.
This is based upon what I saw last Friday, which was good. I must admit to being staggered at the positive reviews from the BBC show, I thought that they were really weak and lifeless, so I was happy with Birmingham. I think that it is a decent way to end my DP concert days and I am glad that i went.

As a side note my wife came too, and thought the band were good especially SM. She did think however that the singer couldn't sing.

Speaking for myself I genuinely find it difficult to accept that IG can't learn the lyrics. It does not matter to me who in the past or present hold sheets of paper, or looks at monitors. The rest of the band have to learn the chords etc, they don't sit at chairs with the sheet music.

I can just imagine to lose the lyrics in the middle of a song in front of thousands of people is an awful situation.
Therefore better to be sure than not..?

My friend who came to the show in Oslo with me thought Gillan sounded just fine, which I did too.
We both accepted the fact that he's in age now.

Of course everyone has their own view, I understand that. But the same logic applies to the band, yet they have learned the music and don't need the music sheet in front of them.
I accept the singers age, of course I have to as there is no alternative, he is how old he is. He was OK at Birmingham.

And just as an edit and to confirm, I was really surprised in Birmingham how good they were. The BBC show was a really weak performance, but Birmingham was very good.

I think that you cant compare remembering next chord with next phrase of lyrics... I think that singer KNOWS following vocal melody - word is some sort of second necessary information added to vocal melody which isnt there in case of guitar player or keyboard player. To me vocal melody is much more similar to next chord, not words. I actually have more difficulties with IG´s issues with start of verses in AIGIY than with him not remembering lyrics yet - it´ll get better.

As I previously stated, if people are happy with his reading the lyrics from a notebook then they are more than allowed to be. For me it is not good, I would prefer the odd stumble than just constantly looking at the lyrics. He has been singing these new songs for several months now and I find it hard to believe he still needs his notes.

OK, I see the difference. To me it is more important than the odd lyric being forgotten.

Apart from the vocals, IG is definitely starting to look/act his age onstage and it makes a stark contrast to say Plant, who's only a few years his junior, but doesn't show any real signs of age at all, in the rock sense of the word.

I think IG needs to adapt to his current abilities. Singing Bloodsucker is not one of them.

C'mon, that's nonsense! How many shows have you been to where afterwards you shook yourself and said "Oh, that was lousy!"?

Not many. Three of them were DP in 1996. So I didn't go see them live again.

I haven't seen the BBC show, so I can't judge that. But I have seen the Stuttgart (see, I'm also from Germany ;-) )show earlier this year and was completely blown away as was the rest of the audience. So there were several thousand people who enjoyed that Purple haven't retired yet.
But here you have a club of some people who are sitting in their comfy chair happy bashing Purple in general and Gillan in persona. I was nearly (just nearly) worried that somethin had happened to LitB, but no, he still can repeat his old phrases. Other still pray to Blackmore which seems to imply bashing Gillan as form of devotion.
Hey, of course they have lost a lot, but there are still plenty of people who enjoy their shows! And compared to the show in Regensburg in 2013, Stuttgart was way better! So I'm glad they continued!

It's not that unusual to leave a concert and think "wow, that was not good". Not every concert that people attend is great. Before last Friday the last DP concert that I attended was really not good, thankfully what will almost certainly be my last DP was a good one.
