Engl Combo used 2016 etc

I read somewhere it’s a savage combo? But on their website it’s quite a different looking amp, therefore guessing it’s an old model, probably from the mid nineties., can anyone confirm.

Thank you

Danke schon Highway frog! A sovereign it is then, ok will revist the site....

Does anyone know what those 2 pedals ontop of the amp facilitate? IIRC he hit a footswitch on the drum riser when going into solos, presumably a volume boost...

Any further information on his 2016 set up appreciated!

I wonder why there are 2 ENGL's. If you look behind these 2, there's a third one. The others are for the acoustic guitar as far as I know.

On a roughly similar topic, I hear Jim Manngard has recently left the master’s employ.....so hopefully the string winding on the #2 Strat, for example, will in future be done to a standard acceptable to all those in this forum!

I guess that the Engl Screamer is a spare amp.
He uses two old (first series) Sovereign 50 combo's. They're out of production for many years now and hard to find.

Re: Engl Combo used 2016 etc

It's the original series Sovereign 50 Watt combo. KT66 power valves. Absolutely superb amps. Discontinued in the late 1990's and as rare as hens teeth. There is also a modern Screamer 50 lurking behind which may also be involved or maybe a spare. The Sovereign is also available as a 100w 2x12 which is what Blackmore used, as the combo, in Rainbow 95' and on many of the BN gigs in the beginning. This version has 6 ECC81's and 4 KT66 power valves, and has a very unique sound. If you look at clips of the 2006 Rome gigs you'll see it hiding at the back of the stage in the dark.

It's impossible to know exactly what amps he finally used for these gigs, but probably a combination of these amps running together 2x sovereigns and a screamer, that would give a great sound. The volume settings were not above 4 either, so not crazy volume. The real question is what was under the drapes where his Tape deck and Guitar synths sat, maybe just an empty flightcase lid, or maybe an ENGL 4x12 or maybe.... well who knows for sure. The unique Blackmore sound is created before it reaches the amps, they just colour it a little.

The Screamer is a nice amp, though by comparison, like many combos now to save space, its badly designed with the valves being upside down transferring heat back into the amp. These Sovereigns are in a different league entirely. They are well designed with the valves upright for proper heat dissipation, I don't understand why ENGL don't still make these it's crazy, but supposedly it's progress.

If you want to buy a Sovereign 50 exactly like the ones you saw him use in these gigs, just let me know, but it really won't come cheap.

One pedal is supposed to be a GE7 graphic EQ.

Because using two amps reduces the noise from the guitar body and the signal chain and allows for a wet/dry combination for using echo/flanger/chorus and other effects. The foot switch might change the boost channel. ENGL have a boost option which can be controlled with a foot switch, which isn't a channel change.

Blackmore's gear is modified anyway, so what you see on stage may or may not be what is making the actual sound you hear. He's always hidden his gear over the years, so nothing will have changed. His sound is difficult to recreate accurately even using seemingly the same equipment as he does.

For all anyone knows he might have a Kemper Modelling amp sitting off stage!
