Re: GH and DC - a member of DP stopped them performing
It probably was Gillan and he was wise for doing so. Musical integrity comes to mind. They played the hits Americans might know, but done by the present day DP.
As I see (and hear) it...Deep Purple aren't done making history and they're definitely not ready to be put in Jann Wenner's nostalgia cage.

Yes, but why offer the chance of a Smoke jam then?

I wish Glenn had the balls to name the one, who prevented hem from singing. Then a I could make my mind up.

Re: GH and DC - a member of DP stopped them performing
You know what, I'm a huge fan of the Coverdale Hughes Purple era and I often struggle with Ian Gillan's Deep Purple (whatever version, including the classic lineup) BUT I can understand what happened that night and I actually think Ian Gillan was probably right to say the current line up should play. It actually makes the process more relevant, although it doesn't answer the question as to why all previous and current members weren't inducted.
However, I honestly think they could have asked David and Glenn to guest with them, if not on Smoke then why not a small jam section? It was a one off chance to bring things together. To actively prevent this from happening (if that is indeed what happened) seems like egotistical madness. Someone should have corrected it.
But it's just a blip really. They went, they got the awards and it's done with. The chance (and it will almost certainly be the only chance) has slipped away. At least when they spoke, they spoke like equals and that didn't get taken away. Good enough.
Listening to Hard Road by the Bluesbreakers right now. Awesome.

Re: GH and DC - a member of DP stopped them performing
I´m gonna say my opinion... Main problem is how this jam would actually look like? The issue IMHO is, that GH was a bit.... overexcited and overreacting about everything regarding RRHOF, which is actually direct opposite with Deep Purple themselves who were quite distant regarding everything about RRHOF. It´s much easier to give valuable jam with instrumentalists than jam of three singers. It´s no secret, that vocally GH is in best shape. This jam would make sense ONLY if it would be some sort of "cooperative jam".... instead of competition "I´m gonna blow everyone of stage" jam. When I saw Glenn´s dress (and I think that only point of his incredibly cheesy black/white suit was being attention catcher) and knew about his "excitement".... I´m not really sure that it would work well. Glenn is Glenn - he nearly ALWAYS tries to oversing others and actually - it would be completely inappropriate at that sort of evening. Smoke On The Water is Mk2 song - there is no point to share vocals with David and Glenn in it - jam after the song... actually pointless. But that´s my take on it. I dont mean that negatively - Glenn is amazing singer, but I think we all know that he is way "too much competitive"...

Re: GH and DC - a member of DP stopped them performing
Dio sang a verse of Smoke at RAH so it can be a "jam" song. Three verses, three singers - not difficult.
