Which lies did Gillan tell about Ritchie? Facts please, no interpretations.

He clamied that the 1993 shows with Ritchie were in half-empty halls (a quote is on English Wikipedia's article about DP) which is nonsense, see snakehead's entry. I don't know whether this actually is a lie because as you know, a lie means that someone tells something wrong knowing that it's wrong, but it's pure nonsense anyway (even ptr admitted that), and he keeps repeating that in countless interviews.
Perhaps he confuses it with the 1994 shows with Satriani - when I saw them in Dortmund, the hall was about half full.

From what I've heard the german shows really were packed. But it seems that it was not the case in other countries as Byljer explains. And as you say it must not be a lie what Gillan said. What's really interesting is that nobody else could name a lie from Gillan ...

By the way, I was in Dortmund in 1994 and it's true, the hall was about half full. I was disappointed, because, although being a fan since 1971, it was my first dp-concert ... But it was fantastic. A week later I saw them in Bielefeld again.

Because he does not have a lot of top end, I agree. But...if SM is a fresh new start precisely because he does not copy RB but brings his own identity, how come that suddenly PR is not a good fit for the very same reason?;-)

Because as I told you - I think that it´s much easier to replace guitar player (and any other instrumentalist) than singer. Nearly everyone here agree that Mk3 / Mk5 performances of Mk2 stuff were vocally disasterous... emoticon

Hi Ptr - actually I was just teasing you a little...you are on permanent active duty:-)
Seriously, I agree with you, but only to a point: take the Beatles - out of four, three sang...and yet, every single song sounds like the Beatles. It was the overall sound that gave them identity, not the voice. And in the case of DP, I believe it's the same, even if I agree that IG is THE voice of DP.

Very interesting point. ptr obviously got hooked on dp by MK VII, as I mean to remember. Could make some people understand him better. And is a proof: All Mks have their fans, they all are important parts of the history. Some of us like this mk better, some the other. Over the years I made my peace with mk III, although Stormbringer still is a bad album in my view. But I was hooked by mk2a and nothing can compare with - not them, but with what gets you excited, when you are young ...

Ptr, only became a Deep Purple fan in 1996???

In some interviwes he mentioned, that he never listened to the MK III and MK IV records. In other interviews he said, that he listened to them right after the release...

That might not be a lie as well when he just can't remember whether he has listened to Burn and Strongbow ...

I was at the Oslo concert on the 15th of November 1993, and it was the only time I've seen a big portion of the hall covered with big, black blankets because of poor ticketsales. If I remember correctly there was about 6500 in the audience that night. I think the hall can take about 9000 depending on the size of the stage. By 1998 and the Abandon Tour the hall was almost filled to capasity. So I guess it wasn't all another Gillanish lie then?

All the German shows in 1993 were sold out, but the halls were half empty in 1994. So it seems that lies and truth depends on the country...

Yeah, you are right. The band, first and foremost Gillan, has used the "half empty halls" as a selling point for the new Purple. It's up for discussion if that was a wise move, but I understand why they/ he did it. You don't go out with a new line up and say "it's all downhill from here", do you? And in the end I would say the new band turned out quite successful emoticon

Gillan can be an annoying motormouth at times, but that 's the way it goes in the musicbiz. I don't care as long as the music is great.

As I said before...........
I was in Essen(Germany) and the hall was packed.
Same for Belgium and The Netherlands.

As I was born in 1986 I "discovered" DP in 2000 - 2001 period because of my father who brought home Total Abandon DVD..... and Steve just stunned me! emoticon I remember that shortly after I discovered them, Jon Lord was leaving. So it was about that time. Actually I think that in 96 (at my 10 years old), I wasnt interested in music at all, it came few years later. emoticon

Interesting to know. I only knew the first version till today. Can you tell me, where I can find an interview, in which he said, that he listened to them right after the release? Or were they done before the time of the internet?
