Re: Gillan takes 30th in Classic Rock‘s ‘Best Frontman’ poll!
A good singer can be a good frontman as well,no problem,it just depends on what you are looking for in a frontman,if the frontman factor comes first, you will most likely subscribe to the ones with less vocal dynamics and more entertaining skills, but then again,I don't need much more than a solid well grouded performance,as long as he delivers,I never get bored with him.
For me it's the person and their vocal skills alone that are cosmic, not how he swings his micstand or what have you.

Re: Gillan takes 30th in Classic Rock‘s ‘Best Frontman’ poll!
I will say this for Gillan 30th is way too low for that young man. If you look at when the Born Again Tour was happening. All you had to do was look at the Stonehenge Stage with the foggy dark atmosphere and no way could I even imagine anyone but Ian Gillan as the vocalist for Black Sabbath. Without any question that is saying ALOT because with both Dio and Ozzy being with Sabbath you would think I should consider those guys as more domineering stage presence wise. Therefore, theoretically Gillan at least with Sabbath was untouchable. Others may disagree but from all the people I know that saw the Born Again Tour, Ian Gillan was at the pinnacle as Rock Performer when he was with Sabbath. It is ironic too because when you think of Gillan most people think Purple but not me. Me Thinks Sabbath.

Now as for Coverdale compared to Gillan, yeah I give Coverdale his props for Snake but his time in Purple was simply not what could be considered his shining moment. He was adequate way more so than Hughes but as far as I am concerned his shining moments came with Page and Whitesnake.

Good point there Terry!
Speaking of Ozzy, can anyone tell me just how his voice hasn't appeared to have aged in 30 something years????!!!!!
I'll give a hint...it's a two part answer.

When you have a voice like Ozzy there isn't much you can do to make it sound worse, after 30 years.
Now, McCartney and Gillan had GREAT voices and over time with touring etc. well, they naturally go down a bit.
But Ozzy?!

I said nothing of the sort about Ozzy having a "great voice"!
Read carefully and try to answer the question please.

Going by the ranking given to Ritchie (was it 100 in some poll). Me things Gillan at 30 it quite an achievement.
Deep Purple are big but not that big.

Yes, I think you are correct. Purple are not in the same league (sales wise) as their contemporaries like Led Zep or Pink Floyd.
