Gillan takes 30th in Classic Rock‘s ‘Best Frontman’ poll!
Classic Rock magazine has a feature article in their latest issue, about the top 100 front men of all time.
Ian Gillan came in 30th place, while Plant, Ozzy, Scott and Tyler were all in the top ten.
How can Gillan be that far back?!
Then it hit me, this might be why DeePurple aren’t as popular as Led Zeppelin or
Black Sabbath or even Areosmith or AC/DC, etc. The front man seems to be so important from the media angle.
Perhaps another reason of course is that DP’s music is truly too intense
(such as long musical passages) and people as they get older don’t want to deal with such things anymore.
At least Gillan made the top 100,
poor Jon Anderson (YES) didn’t even make the list.
But, after all it’s just another silly article designed to fill up pages.

Re: Gillan takes 30th in Classic Rock‘s ‘Best Frontman’ poll!
Compared to guys like Ozzy Osbourne, Steven Tyler, Bon Scott etc, most people are gonna be fighting a losing battle! Gillan is not an overly charismatic frontman, whereas as those guys were/are. Think about it, Axl Rose, Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Scott and Steven Tyler are all off their heads and can control an audience like nobody's business (but just can't control themselves!). Gillan isn't even in the same league, in my opinion. Note that this was a top 100 greatest frontmen and not top 100 greatest singers.

I have to agree. While Gillan is surely one of the top singers ever he's hardly as good as a frontman. My top fronmen woud be: Iggy Pop, Bruce Dickinson, Pau Stanley, Mick Jagger, Freddy Mercury and even Rob Halford, who may not move much on stage but still behaves incredibly artistic.

I disagree!
Bon Scott took first place and I can't
even picture him on stage, so he was
hardly the impressive frontman.
Oh, after the ‘Best Frontman’ feature, then came a AC/DC article.
Wow, that worked out well for Classic Rock magazine.

I think you are wrong. To say Gillan is as good a frontman as Ozzy Osbourne or Bon Scott (or basically somebody of that insane calliber) is ludicrous.

Re: Gillan takes 30th in Classic Rock‘s ‘Best Frontman’ poll!
The man who sang Satisfaction is the best of the frontmen. Of course, where are you going to put Elvis and Sinatra because they should be included in any frontmen poll. I know it is a Classic Rock Poll, but if those two men did not come along, MUSIC as we know it would be meaningless.

Just because you can´t even picture him doesen´t mean he´s not a impressive frontman ! I guess one could say he was indeed a impressive frontman ,but didn´t impressed me ! Bon Scott could raise cheers from the audience with a simple naught laughter ! it´s normal for people like Bon Scott and Bruce Dickinson are considered great frontmans ! they have the charisma asside from the vocals ! people like Ian Gillan ( my favorite singer ) or Jon Anderson are not that charismatic to me

Re: Gillan takes 30th in Classic Rock?s ?Best Frontman? poll!
Is this list online somewhere?
I'd be curious to know where people like Coverdale, Dio, Hagar and Morrison ranked on this list.

Coverdale placed 29.
As for the list on line I do not know.
