Top 5 female singers
Pure and simple, your top 5 (or more) female singers. A poll with no Purple in it for sure!
Mine (in no particular order):
1) Sandy Denny
One of the most unique voices in the the history of music. Her work with Fairport Convention and her solo albums are stunning.
2) Kate Bush
Another unique voice. The Dreaming and Hounds of Love are my favourites of hers.
3) Anneke van Giersbergen
I know her work from The Gathering only, but Nighttime Birds is a classic 90s album, mostly due to her commanding voice
4) Sarah McLachlan
Poppy choice, but I happen to like her albums Solace and Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. Atmospheric music.
5) Janis Joplin
'nuff said.

Re: Top 5 female singers
1) Heather Findlay
She does everything from folky acoustic to screaming rock, and I like that kind of versatility. Also fantastic stage presence (and I have seen her live 61 times )
2) Kate Bush
Like Niko said, unique.
3) Sandy Denny
Agreeing with Niko again. I think the later Fairport and the Fotheringhay albums are the stand-outs.
4) Judy Garland
Yes, that's a serious choice! Live at Carnegie Hall is an essential album.
5) Rachel Newton
You've probably never heard of her. She's a Scottish folk singer, and if you like that style of music then she's got the perfect voice for it.

Re: Top 5 female singers
Don't really think I can do a proper top five. Female lead singers, overall, do very little for me. I enjoy Kate Bush and The Motels' Martha Davis, but hands down my favorite female singer is Annie Haslam of Renaissance.
