Gillan has made it pretty clear how he feels about Mk III and IV, I doubt he cares DC is doing this. The motive might confuse him, but its really no different than what the current DP lineup is doing with Mk II material.

 emoticon It is VERY different!!!

You're right, this is not intended as a carbon copy of the 1970s originals. I think this makes more sense, it's given a new style.

Until we hear Mistreated. Joking of course. I hope he does something very different with that one, something like the acoustic thing he did with Doug on YouTube...

Re: The Purple Album.....

David actually did a cover of Holy Man? What will that sound like?

Anyhoo, I always said that if David did a cover album of Purple tunes in the context of Whitesnake, that Whitesnake was near the end. Because I never really expected a cover album from DC. I hope Whitesnake also releases and album of new tunes.

I like the song choices and the video itself. Sounds different from what I would expect, but not bad either. I've heard so many cover versions of Stormbringer, that this is just one more. An album of Purple tunes is cool of course, I just never really expected Whitesnake to do a cover album ... ever.

Glenn, Ritchie and Ian should have been involved with this ...

I'm just not overwhelmed by this announcement ... I think it's cool, but I'm not jumping up and down with excitement either ...

THIS is truly AWFUL. I just can't imagine how anybody can enjoy this version of Stormbringer. It's just full of pointless noise - a typical metalized version of a groovy rock numer from the 70's.

DC's voice is terrible, RB's solo just doesn't make sense in terms of melody of the song. I don't want to judge entire album by only one song but I have a terrible feeling this might be in fact the LOW point in DC's career.

The whole self-hommage idea isn't bad but only when it's done the Gillan's Inn way, with guest musicians, totally new arrangements, more open attitude, not only contained to re-recording songs in a more heavy manner with multilayered guitar.

Awaful!

Yeah John, me neither,m but when was the last time you did, because of an album by anyone? Goes to the 1980s, maybe early 1990s for me. It just can't have the same impact anymore.

Like I wrote above, I think the greatest thing about this is that it shows how brilliant those songs are. SB, for example, is a brilliantly written track.

I agree. I think if nothing else this brings to light three albums worth of songs that have been ignored by both DC and (lets face it) Deep Purple for so many years. It makes you remember how good they were.

Hey. I like the version of Stormbringer. There is only so much "rearranging" you can do with that song. There are other songs on the album that you can have more freedom to explore.

BTW: I think the polar extremes of thoughts and opinions of the first song is a fairly good sign that there is alot of interest in the concept. I'm curious to see what happens with the full album.

Great how opinions wary. I didn't hear anything noteworthy on Gillan's Inn. I didn't hear it as totally new, only inferior to the originals. Maybe if they had mixed up the musicians, instead of having Tony Iommi on a Black Sabbath song.

I liked Beach's guitar here. Didn't care too much for his stuff when I saw him live.

Impossible to say how this album will be as a whole. Will it be th elow point? I have no idea. The last WS album I listened to was SOTT, the last DC album ITL, though I have seen the band live in the late 2000s.I'm sure I will buy this one.

So, having thought about this. Would DC and RB have made this record if things had worked out or were they just planning a tour...?

Don't get me wrong. I'm glad that David has done this album so he might introduce his fans in WS to these DP songs. But I'm not sure how many fans of WS are unfamiliar with the DP tunes.

Yes, it is a tribute to the greatness of the songs and an homage to DP. However, DP also sells. And Coverdale knows that. Did he REALLY do this as a true homage, or because someone convinced him that a Purple cover album would sell a lot?

Whatever the case may be, I'm still going to buy the record, as I will enjoy hearing DC revisit these tunes.

Nonetheless, I would hope David puts out an album of all original material in the near future.

Cover albums don't suit DC, especially since he is so full of creativity to do new stuff.

One final note: I hope this album does get Ritchie Blackmore's attention. What I really want is a collaboration between David and Ritchie before they all retire. I think David would sound pretty good doing a song within the context of Blackmore's Night, and I'm sure Ritchie can still play a mean blues tune. I hope DC's career does not end with a cover album.

Oh, and I'm wondering if DC will keep Mistreated in the set list this time. The last time WS performed Mistreated, DC stated, "I don't feel the song anymore" or something a long those lines.

I'm guessing he's feeling it now ?

LOL
