Re: The Purple Album.....

Ian is absolutelly TOP FORM in the late 70s till 83 period. I LOVE his voice as much as i love it on the 69-73 period. I think he had more control in the early 80s, and he was a more experienced singer. I dont know, i just think hes amazing on the early 80s.

I know im on the minority, but i love his voice in 93 too. Am i the only one? RB didnt like it.... emoticon

I always thought that Lord's death impacted DC profoundly. I guess we can see that right here. I think David regarded Lord as an older brother/father figure in the music business and it would make sense that his death would affect him like this.

I don't know if David means he is "going out" like he is going to retire soon. However it does appear that he sees the end approaching.

hmm....he didn't turn up for the RAH gig though? Colin Hart mentions in his book DC was quite rude to him and JL on one occasion, keeping them waiting for 'an audience' for several hours.

I believe that DC had knee surgery shortly before the RAH Lord Tribute and couldn't travel.

He had a knee surgery in October 2013. Months before the RAH Jon Lord Tribute. So can't believe that's the reason he didn't show up.

He wouldn' be exposed for a song or two. Definitely! He always sounds good or at least deacent on Burn. I heard him, e.i, in 2008 when he really had trouble with his voice, and even then sounded good on Burn as the encore that night.

I agree. Listen to him singing Rock n Roll with Sammy Hagar in 2012. Sounds good.

Hmmm….I don’t know, take a listen to Burn from the Forevermore dates……
I can’t think of any other reason he’d miss that event.

Re: The Purple Album.....

I think he would have managed a couple of songs at the RAH without exposing himself vocally. He was genuinely pretty strong vocally when I saw him right at the beginning of the last UK tour although performances later in the year were poor. However, I reckon he would have been just fine performing a couple of songs outwith the rigours of a tour.

I've often wondered just what relationship DC and Jon had during the 30 or so years after Jon left WS. I don't think they had much contact and I remember Jon saying he bumped into DC in America for the first time in many years and 'didn't recognise him'. It's a real shame if they became distant as there is no doubt that DC genuinely looked up to Jon from 1973-1984.

Hearing him and Glenn doing You Keep On Moving together would've been the highlight of the evening.

Well, I listened to Tilburg and other concerts on youtube from the 2013 tour, and David's voice is certainly stronger at the beginning of the tour in comparison to the end of it.
